Hello fellow UK citizens. I apologise thoroughly for taking up your time, but I have taken the liberty of drafting a petition asking the UK government to support the British games industry by funding gaming companies much in the same way as film companies are currently funded. I personally believe that with the recent changes in the industry (eg. development cost surge, lack of a dominant format) and with the increasing acceptance of video games as being art, is it time for the development of innovative or creative games to be aided by the government, much like it is in France and Norway. After all, Britain has always had a strong games industry (I blame the huge number of quirky, nerdy people, and the terrible weather :p) and it's time that the government gave it more support!

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/fundvideogames/

So if you would please give it your consideration, I would be eternally grateful. Thanks in advance.

-Mark

that petition page is the biggest joke ever.... meh!

i'll still sign it.....

EDIT:
cant remember who posted a link to a petition that requested something like tony blair to stand on his head and eat ice cream... also 50,000 sigs was asking too much it was only 4,000

Ive signed but you know how these things go. And plus how the hell can the government afford to give money to games companies to help encourage the development of it when its having trouble coming up with the 9.3 billion thats gonna be needed for the 2012 olympics. I tell u wat though, if they start increasing the tax of the scots to foot the bill, there will be hell to pay.

It was for him to stand on his head and juggle ice-cream, possibly the most sensible thing he's ever done (aside from the minimum wage). That petition was talked about in a BBC article actually, but as an example of how the petitions system isn't taken seriously, which is rubbish.

How about not building that ridiculous £100 million mosque for starters

Yeah, they started with people being allowed to make humorous petitions, but due to the sheer number of them they've stopped allowing them through.

Encouraging an expanding industry before it becomes completely bought out by the Americans is surely a money-making thing in the long run. And the government can find money for anything, unless it's something that the general population actually want :p.

Indeed. How about finishing the bloody mosque down the road from me too; it's been half-built for years now.

I am completely against this!

I think government funding for commercial activities is a bad idea, if a commercial proposition is to survive it has to be able to stand up by itself.

There has always been a lot of great computer game talent in the UK, but poor business skills and short sighted (for quick profit) strategies have held back the British companies. Pouring government cash into the mix would make things worse due to the lack of responsibility when government cash is involved (you can just blame Tony Blair when things go wrong).

Not quite sure how that's gonna help save money, but it's a good idea regardless.

Still would have more use than a giant mosque.

id rather get cheaper dentists or free. Not have to pay for my glasses not have to pay for prescriptions then maybe let the government give the games people money. The olympics should just not happen here or if it does make it in teh middle of the fecking country so everyone has a chance to go if they want. They shoudlnt be building mosques especially if they cost £100 million ! What a waste of money.

If the government has anything to do with anythin lots of money is always wasted. Look at the millenium dome and the scottish parlement building 100s of millions was wasted coz nobody cares what happens as no one or no company loses any mooney just teh government. Even when i worked on teh electrical maintenence of the MOD bases all over scotland the amount of money wasted on stupid things and doing things wrong was terrible but nobody cares as its the government paying for it.

Things can never be perfect. Whilst the education systems and healthcare provision can be improved, you will always have people moaning about expenditure on this or that. After all, there is no country in the world where standards cannot be improved.

Government should not avoid funding arts and sports. They are important too. Both for the mind and the body.

Architecture is also important; we can't have whole country looking like a plastic box, can we?

Think what the Olympics are bringing to the UK... jobs, tourism, respect etc

If you want something to moan about, pick spending £20bn on new nuclear weapons we will never need and can never justifiably use.

The nuclear weapons are there for a reason. The only thing that prevents the use of nuclear ordinance is the thread of MAD. If we don't have nuclear ordinance that is modern then the threat of MAD when firing upon us is removed. Hence we need the nuclear ordinance to impose the thread of MAD on anyone who would dare fire upon us. It's a stalemate.

Edit: By MAD I meant Mutually Assured Distruction and thus the nuclear weapons are a neccasity.

Can you envisage a world where the United States would let some country nuke Britain? Can you envisage a world where the United States would nuke Britain?

If no to both, Britain spending £20bn on nuclear weapons is a farce. There are plenty of other countries in the world still existing regardless of whether they have nuclear weapons.

well since america is the only country to use nuclear weapons on another country then yes in teh future they coudl decide to do it again. The olympics will bring nothing to us up here in scotland. The jobs you say it will create will mostly be done bye the many many many foreigners in london its like going abroad when you goto london :D

More people in work = higher tax income = better schools and hopitals
More tourism = More people in work = higher tax income = better schools and hopitals

Anyway, Londoners are being asked to pay more than you anyway through council tax. Plus the Lottery is funding a bit too.

Also, I don't know why you are talking about foreigners in London. They are there because they are needed. Who else is going to work for £5.50 an hour in London with London rents and London prices?
