xfce menu > settings > appearance > fonts

enable antialiasing. set hinting to full. set sub-pixel order to RGB.

voila. everything looks much better

I feel like this should be the default in the next firmware release; other people should see if I'm correct or not

It's already using anti-aliasing, but this is the RGB version yeah?

Switch off the anti-aliasing. Go on. Poor eyes!

it wasn't really working right because hinting was turned off

Hmmm. I just tried it with hinting and RGB, and I prefer it the way it was.

Life is all about variety though. I'm happy you're enjoying your Pandora more now :)

Isn't there something equivalent in XFCE? No? What a pity.

But actually who knows, there might be an option for this even in XFCE by now.

i know it's probably not a popular option, but I find that "slight" hinting improves readability. It makes fonts a bit softer, but they seem to display darker. Also, that subpixel rendering tends to horizontally "thin" characters, which makes them slightly more difficult to read. The bad part in this is that very small fonts will likely suffer and become blobs, but pandora's pixel pitch is probably so small that anything that small would be near impossible to read, so if you haven't, I say give it a try.
