Well, to be fair to the 3G module:
- Yes it has less carrier compatibility in the US; removing T-Mobile compatibility, leaving you with only AT&T or Cricket (which is just AT&T off-contract).
- However, the 3G module gains location-based compatibility by giving you at least one 3G option in both US and Europe. The US 4G chip is limited to 2G if you go to Europe. For people who plan to travel between the US and Europe, this is a big plus for the 3G chip.
Honestly I think I'm still leaning towards the 4G module due to theoretical top speed while at home in the US, but losing carrier compatibility in order to gain location compatibility seems like a pretty fair trade to me.
So your argument FOR the 3G instead of the 4G is that it will DECREASE the number of people who could theoretically purchase a Pyra with mobile data and have it work with a carrier in their area?
The US 4G GSM module has a population of 191 million potential purchasers/users (AT&T & T-mobile) without requiring them to switch providers.
The 3G module has a population of 128 million potential purchasers (AT&T only), MANY of which will always lament that someone castrated their data connectivity because they wanted mobile data to work crappy in both the US and Europe at the expense of US based usage - which is the whole point of -having- the module to begin with. Many of those potential buyers will just decide that they'll use WiFi hot spot via their phone which would be 10x or more faster than buying a 3G module.
AT&T and T-mobile US 4G GSM data speeds average around 15Mbps with peaks up to 60Mbps.
AT&T and T-mobile US 3G data speeds run right around 0.8Mbps with peaks up to 3 Mbps.

Even if it only cost half as much, 3G is not a viable data device option. If we're going to pay for US mobile data coverage, that means we WANT mobile data coverage. If it were 10 years ago for the Pandora, then 3G would have been as good as it gets.
The price difference between the modules pales in comparison to the monthly service contract to use it. If you're going to pay for that service contract, then you may as well get the most out of it - which means 4G.
I'm already on the hook for a prototype, which I understand will come with a US 4G GSM module.
If I were given a choice between buying a 4G, 3G or no mobile, I would choose 4G. If I had to choose between 3G and none, I would choose none because at that point I would still have to carry and bind to a phone to get decent throughput.
But the 3G gets GPS and people will want that just for the GPS... There are lots of inexpensive bluetooth pucks that do GPS too. I would see the audience of people willing to buy a wireless module just for the GPS but are too cheap to buy it at the difference between 3G and 4G prices to be a very small audience. If they're so desperate to save $50, then they'll also want to save another $25 and just use a bluetooth GPS puck.
The US mobile chip option needs to focus on US mobile data capability. That means using the US 4G GSM chip or nothing.
