I'd love it if there was an app, or the firmware video player was updated, to let the GP2X play commercially released movies in SD format.

I saw this in a store:

and thought it was the Pirates of the Carribean movies on SD cards.

Here's another page discussing the issue.

Does anyone know if any studio has actually released any movies like this?

Dude... there is no pirates of the Caribbean movie on SD. Take a closer look to the website you posted. Or were you talking hypothetical? Anyways, I don't think any of the big publishers would release anything for gp2x on sd card, be it games, videos or any other content. They don't give a damn.

If there was a demand for commercial movies on SD cards and they would release some, you would just pop them into your gp2x and watch em. No changes needed. I don't know why you would want that though. Just download a movie and slap it on there or rip one from your dvd collection if you want it to be legal.

not to mention movies for the psp is a failure, and umd is safeguarded.

I'm not so sure your right about that. I remeber my niece had a mp4 movie player that used sd cards and you could buy pre converted movies on sd cards from disney.
