I think this video does a descent job of showing samples of some retro games ran in their original low res glory or scaled up in more "normal" resolutions.

I don't think it does, they have got filters on it. You should be able to get it looking much closer to the original even at high-resolutions by fiddling with the MAME options.

No filtering. Also, this isn't on a VGA CRT or LCD, it's on one of those arcade multisync's with a fat dot pitch.

If it is not filtered, then why do the images look rounded (i.e. totally different) on the scaled image?

Direct3D tends to do some of that as your resolution goes higher. Plus, the large dot pitch of these "arcade" multisyncs does some additional smoothing. So hires + direct3d + large dot pitch.

Try viewing two jpegs at the same resolution on a LCD, then on a VGA CRT, then on a NTSC/PAL TV and you'll see a lot of rounding.

Some ppl prefer that while some ppl prefer the original pixelation. Some others prefer the high res pixelation without the rounding like if you quad the resolution on an LCD.

The video description says the pictures are smoothed on the scaled version :p. I *have* a 29" arcade monitor, and it doesn't do that much to round off the graphics.
