Ethernet wall socket question

Contacted my ISP today regarding increasingly frequent issues that have been ongoing for a few months now.. having to reset my router more & more frequently, connection often failing (every couple of days or so) and a gradual cumulative slowing of browsing speed from one reset until the next.
My assumption was that the router needs replacing, the engineer said that's quite possible based on what I'd told him.. but first asked me if my Ethernet wall socket had a removable cover & if so would I try removing the cover and connecting my Ethernet cable to an additional port that is hidden behind the cover (it has, but I haven't done it yet)
What is this other port & why would connecting to it potentially help?

Thanks.
