I am pretty un learned in the ways of linux and it's driver system but wouldn't an external hard drive via usb be pretty feesable If anybody has any insight on this please share because I have a 160 gig external drive sitting here collecting dust :)

You might need extra power for the drive. I don't know if the Pandora is going to be able to deliver a steady 5v on batteries.

Of course, your battery would take a hit. I might use a HDD at home where I have power to plug into (for both HDD and Pandora), but I'll stick to a pair of 8GB SDHCs when I'm mobile.

Maybe a powered usb port with batteries for power (if such a beast exists).

Just had a brainwave. These things are mostly used by photographers for portable storage, but they're also the perfect Pandora companion. They're essentially USB hard drives with multi card readers built in. Most importantly, they've got internal rechargable batteries.

(All $AUD)

DigiMate III (Hi Speed version) - 80GB - $165.00

Check the site for more.

My old man was after one, and was on a ~$200 budget. He got one sans HDD for $70, and I picked him up a 2.5" 120GB drive for $70... so $140 total. I may well get myself one down the track.

Since 32GB SD cards are now starting to ship that's 64GB + if you want stick a 64GB USB stick in the back too (get a right angle usb gadget to tuck it in to the back of the system) and you could have around 128GB... this isn't enough? :) It's good for power consumption too.

or just buy alot of SD cards and carry them with you? not much programs/games/files that needs more than a few GB at the most :)

so all emulators on one card etc, then have SDs with
SD01 - NES games -8gb
SD02 - SNES games -8gb
SD03 - PSX games1 -8/16gb
SD04 - PSX games2 -8/16gb
SD05 - Documents -1-4gb
SD06 - Homebrew Pandora games -32gb
SD07 - Malicious apps etc :p

and so on, cheaper than most other options I would think since SD cards doesn't cost much at all 1-8GB at least and doesn't drain the batteries as much.

Craig - No arguments there, but the cost of 32GB cards will be prohibitive for most. Retail prices look like they'll be in the $300+ ballpark, initially anyway.

I'll probably get by just fine with 2x 8GB cards. But if I want some serious portable storage down the track, a battery powered 120GB HDD for $140 will be hard to go past!

Holokauston - I hate swapping cards. :p Oh, don't forget movies. Movies need the gigabytes.

I agree Gruso.

32GB or larger cards is going to be too costly for me and screw changin my SD cards around all of time.

If I can get the media player to work great with my converted movies that will be my space hogger.

And excellent for wallet consumption! How much is 128Gb of USB/SD storage going to set you back at current prices?!!

Certainly in 6-18 months it should be a bit more cost effective but for now I'd rather buy a 120Gb hard drive for a fraction of the cost, and a spare battery!

Yes it will be expensive at first but I'd guess 32GB SD cards to fall down to the 50quid range pretty fast (based on past trends). The HDD will suck the power and be bulky.

I'd stick to 2x32GB SD myself, hell my laptop only has a 32GB HDD as it is! These are such huge amounts of storage space. I lived with my amiga for many years with just 800kb floppy disks, it's quite amazing when you think of how it has advanced especially in the last 2-3 years.

Yep, I just bought a 250gb external hdd for backup purposes mostly and it holds more than my desktop computer and my tiny server together.

It's absurd really, soon people won't be talking about GB but TB and with the amount of storage place and RAM people got, few bother to write efficient programs and just throw in everything no matter... =/

8gb each for NES and SNES games?! All the SNES and NES games ever developed COMBINED is far less than 8gb... I think.

Speaking of storage on the SD cards... what are the odds that we'll be able to concatenate the storage so that its seen as only one drive? It would make it much easier for multimedia purposes.
