Hi, This game looks like a good game to port over because of its wealth of features and its source code is available to the public.

The source code can be gotten at its official site here http://www.apex-designs.net/frontalassault.html

There are also 2 other games on that site with source code, one is a 6 player tetris clone, and one is a capture the flag game. That company is also working on a great 3D GTA clone for the PC, Linux, and GBA. Im sure if we all asked nice and introduced the GP32 to him, he would want to port that over and sell it on JoyGP.

BTW- Im new to this scene and am asking for a GP32 for christmas.

someone has to tell them about the gp32 and that they could publish their gp32 version of those games (especially the gta clone) via entware. i think everyone would profit of that. maybe hando or someone else who has a bit responsibility over the gp32 community should tell them about our nice little handheld friend
=)

frontal assault, only the best aim, power game out there, and tons of weapons, if this gets onto the gp32 im gunna donate $50 to gp32x.

i e-mailed the webmaster, my letter is as follows

The man you would need to email is James Daniels. He made all of the games on that site and replies to e-mails very fast (he usually replies to my questions about the his game Payback the next day and once did within 5 minutes!). But be sure to tell him to port Payback because if he doesnt port Frontal assault, then some other person can because the source is out and Payback looks great on GBA but could look twice as good on the GP32.

Interesting! I loved Scorched Earth on the PC, but haven't been able to play it on a modern PC for many, many years. I researched it a bit, and here are a few classic games that all cloned the same idea:

Scorched Earth
Tank Wars
Scorched Tanks
Worms

And the modern, latest incarnations:

Pocket Tanks
Scorched 3D
Scorched Earth 3D
Scorched Earth 2000
Scorched Earth Extreme

And here are a few URLs to look through:

I like your enthusiasm for the GP32. If only it could emulate just about any system 32 bit and under.

I remember Scorched Tanks on the Amiga and if this game is half as good as you say I'd love to see it ported. :)

that looks like one Coooool game.... :D

how do I play it on PC?? do I need a Amiga Emulator???

yeah, you can find a good one on kazaa i forgot what is is called. and it is probably twice as good as i said because i have been playing it since i was 3 years old :)

ahem, soon the gp32 will be able to emulate 32 bit and under :) thats why i said about . just wait a few months and we will have it :)

Going on the general principle that the machine doing the emulation needs to be approximately ten times more powerful than the system it’s emulating, what 32 bit systems will do you think the GP32 will ever be able to emulate? I don't wish to be negative - just realistic.

can I play this game on my actual Amiga 500 by putting it on a Floppy disc???

Did anybody look at the payback section of the website? You should cause that game looks really cool, so far, the gba version has like 11 citys to go in and you can randomly generate missions and go on rampages and all that. I think we should convince him to port that after Frontal Assault (if he does do it) just so he already got a hang of the gp32.

http://www.apex-designs.net/payback.html - thats the site

EDIT- I just remmembered that GP32 uses SMC so we would be able to create and share our own custom maps like the home computer versions using an editor he would probably let us use on PC and then just put in a folder on the card.

*sigh*

Hi Blaine0002,

> Hello, i have been playing frontal assault on my AMIGA since i was about 3 years old, and it is still one of my favorite games. ever.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it.

> and tell you that YOU NEED TO PORT THIS GAME TO THE GP32!!!!

Unfortunately, Frontal Assault was written in AMOS, which isn't available for the GP32. This means a GP32 version would need to be a complete rewrite rather than just a port and unfortunately I haven't got the time to do that. However, the source code is freely available so if anyone else wants to convert it then that's fine with me.

Thanks,
James.

i sent him another reply,

Hi Blaine0002,

> so does this mean not even payback is directly portable?

No. Payback is written in C so it would be much easier to port. However, I'd need an advance from a publisher to fund a GP32 port.

anyone know what this means?

lol, he emailed me back too and said this

Hi Brad,

Hey, you probably just got an email about porting Frontal assault from Blaine0002 onto the GP32(If you hevent read it, read it now because you will be confused with this one) but what you should really do with that system is port over Payback.

If the GBA version does well and the GP32 takes off then I may do a version of that platform. However at the moment the market seems quite small so it would be hard to justify converting it without an advance from a publisher.

Thanks,
James.

That means that he wants to see if a publisher for the GP32 will be ready to publish the game before he begins working on it. But I think he doesnt need a publisher because of Entware and whatnot.

EDIT- I think we should tell him about the euro launch because that will surely give many more opurtunities and all that, so he could probably have the game done by like the summer if he started porting in the next few months.

And in offtopic news- I just ordered my GP32 from GBAX and now all I have to do is get a SMC and wait 4-12 days!

So why not try the rewrite? Games like this are really simple, so I would think a rewrite would not be that big of a project. It would also give the opprtunity of adding features found in other games of this type, like Scorched Earth, Tank Wars, Scorched Tanks, Worms, and Pocket Tanks.

Another good "from scratch" project would be a Advanced War clone.

Both have few demands on the platform, and are easy to do, vs a modern type game.

At least we got some good news from him. Maybe he could have Payback ported to clash with the euro release of GP32 in 2004. Maybe Gamepark would publish for him, or maybe he could just sell online like what entware does. What I want to know tho is how much more powerful is the GP32 than the GBA, is the GBA better in any way (other than its mass marketing)? Cause if its any stronger than it can have better graphics than those in the newest screens at http://www.apex-designs.net/payback.html
