I've already worked through the lazyfoo tutorials which teach you how to code with SDL and coded a breakout style game.

The problem is with the lazyfoo tutorials, they only teach you how to use SDL and not game programming techniques as a whole. As a result, my game was probably very poorly coded with constant data passing in and out of classes that probably wasn't needed.

So I was wondering if there are any good tutorials that teach good game programming technique as a whole instead of focusing on sdl.

Game design is a really deep subject. I usually cruise ebay for books on it and have picked up a few winners there, like Buckland's Programming Game AI by Example and Feil and Scattergood's Beginning Game Level Design and lot of other older texts on related subjects such as animation, art, etc., it's a big mixed bag. Never seen one tutorial or book that covered everything, maybe Adams' High Speed Animation and Simulation for Microcomputers that actually got into the art and all but it's 25+ years old. Lot of different schools of thought on it out there too. Here's an interesting site, got some good reading on the blue squares and a few other techniques, personally I break every rule, design while I code and fill some weird apparition of a spec that came to me in while dreaming but the actual framework design and leveling is pretty textbook.

I have a lot of programming books, and especially game programming.

The absolute best beginner book I have is:

Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus: Fundamentals of 2D and 3D Game Programming
by Andre LaMothe
Published By:Sams
ISBN:0672313618

It comes with a CD and you work through building a game framework in C that is used to make a pretty fun game at the end of the book. I can't recommend it highly enough!

I did note that you wanted a free online tutorial, but even so this book is better. :)
