Will there ever be a GP2X with a d-pad produced? I had the mk2 but sold it on Ebay due to the really crap thumbstick.

Would be interested in one with a d-pad though.

GPH can't just put in a Dpad as it could result in patent infringment (which could then result in anyone selling the gp2x being sued).

Even the PSP does not have a Dpad, it has 4 buttons close together.

I will be able to give more details on this soon.

Huh? There is going to be another GP2X with a D pad like control?

That's strange... I've been told that the US patent for the d-pad has expired. I just googled quickly and found this:
D-pad Wiki
The wiki says that the patent expired in 2005. Which seems about right considering the patent is filed 1985 and US patents last 20 years from the date they were filed. Seems like there's no risk unless Nintendo has some other patent on the d-pad?

Maybe something like that.
Really? Interesting. If something like that does indeed happen, that may be enough to attract me back to the GP2X. Currently I'm only doing handheld stuff on a Nintendo DS.

You are teasing us Craig.

Acually, I have a Mk 1 First Edition with a d-pad, but it's playing up at the moment. I pm'ed Evil Dragon a couple of weeks ago about buying a new one from him and have him mod it before he sends it, but he said davec is having difficulty obtaining some of the parts at the moment. I intended to wait until they were around again.

Now, if you are hinting at a new unit being manufatured by GPH, either the same 2x with some form of d-pad, or a new unit all togther, then I think I may have to wait and see what all this is about.

Go on Craig, give us a few more hints :)

It would be great to see a hardware refresh for the GP2X. Better control pad and spring battery contacts are the only issues I have with my MK2. Good luck with everything!

Why not feed us some specific rumours, Craig? If not to us, then to whom? :)

Then why does everyone else with a console other than Nintendo have a D-pad? I don't see any of them being sued ;) Sounds like GPH is just lazy. It was only the "+" that you can't do.

The Genesis, the Saturn and the Xboxeshave a circular d-pad and the Playstation(s) have a broken up d-pad. They don't count. The only odd one out that comes to mind is the Dreamcast which really does have a standard d-pad.

Just a little question: Is the D-pad comming as a new hardware update, so there's gonna be a GP2x MK III or something or can we MK I owners have our units modded with a dpad (which would just simply RULE! since DaveC hasn't any spare parts for his mod... :( )

If the chance of being sued on technology designs was low there would not be so many companies who specialise in checking your design (at rather large cost).

It's a mine field when you release a new system and takes weeks of patent checking, the control area is one of the most complex to avoid trouble in. It could be that Sega just paid nintendo a licence fee. Etc. Etc.

We would rather get things right and legal :)

Craigix isn`t giving too much away at the moment, So i suppose we`ll just have to wait and see.

Yep, i'm sure there is even more than that to any update which may happen :)
But judging by his quote above, This could possibly mean a totaly revamped GP2x unit, Though i am only guessing and could be completely wrong.

Sit tight and we shall see.
