I've been searching for a gaming umpc like the 3X but couldn't find anything that has got the same specs and price.
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places though. I like to compare before buying something, so I'd like to see some alternatives.

I've seen the Nokia N800 and Pepper Pad 3, and although very nice, doesn't seem to be really suited for gaming. Price is also higher and doesn't seem to have a lot of software.

I think the EEE PC is the closest competition. Should be about $200 / (£200  ). Yeah its more like a mini laptop than handheld but it still looks very portable and quite cheap.

Here is a good page on the specs http://www.eeeuser.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=118 a bit better than 3x I think.

Its not marketed as a gaming umpc but it has good capabilities for one. I will be buying it to play games like sub culture and screamer since it can run windows. Oh and its useful for education as well. ;)

I am sure I will end up with both eventually. :p

Very nice small laptop. If the price in Europe is low and after I've seen some good reviews I might get one as well. I think this could be more suited for some gamers (especially if you not bothered with the size and lack of (d-)pad. I do think they are different enough not to steal away large quantities of customers from each other.
You said yourself that you will probably buy both ;)

I've been searching even more and really.. don't find anything like it. I think the guys have struck a goldmine.

Let's not forget that the GP3X's battery life is estimated to last at least twice as long as the EEE PC's, which means a lot for a portable device :)

The EEE PC will be much better as a laptop that does traditional laptop work. I can see myself picking up the 10" screen model when my current laptop will die on me (it's already starting to )

Don't expect a community as tight as this one to form around the EEE though.

The only direct competition to the GP2X/"Gp2x" that I know about is the Bug.

"Bug labs had a well attended get together in NYC, this was the first time they've shown real hardware in public, so it was pretty interesting to talk to their CEO Peter and their marketing fellow Jeremy about where they're going... The goal is to make it easy for people to use modules like GPS, camera, Wi-Fi, screens, keyboards, etc all in the eclipse (open IDE) environment with everything being a web service of some sort. So, programmers being able to do hardware easier. They said everything will be open source - schematics, source and board files. I would like to see a working prototype once they're ready as well as more details, but I'm glad they're showing as much as they can, when they can as they move along. The event was packed, maybe 50+ people all there to hear more about open source hardware, in the VC circles and in hip publications open source hardware is gaining more attention - should be interesting to see what happens. Here are a few more photos."

This thing couldl suck up some sale's if it comes out by the holiday's. It's a hardware emulator and PMP, it uses fpga to emulate hardware.

1 it's Opensource
2 2gb SD cards
3 music and video playback
4. it's ugly now but will sell in a sleek clam shell case.
5. It will emulate 80's 8bit vintage computes chip s.

It's a chinese clone.

It'll probably just have a FOAC or SFOAC. Not really competition.
It still looks nice. I doubt it'll have either of those chips, it's a PMP. Not that it matters, the Z80 PMPs are nice too.

I'm faily sure, it's just one of the generics I'm sure I saw before. Not sure if it was the one with SFC support.

EDIT: I found it. It plays roms from NES, SNES and MD. Fairly sweet.

Also supports TV-OUT and a ton of codecs including VOB.

I found this one.

Detachable gamepad. Plays roms from Megadrive, nes, GBC and GB.

Still not open source, so its not competition.

That ones looks awesome :D. Think you can find where to buy it? With a bit of work, I'm sure it could be made open source ;).

That is extremely bulky and ugly, but if it is released as a compact clamshell (same size or smaller than the DS) and costs around £100 I might be tempted :p
I've just checked the forums for that device and they are saying that it will have support for the SNES and possibly the Mega Drive (with a lot of crazy fiddling).

I think this really is the closest competition to the GP2X/craigs thing.

If you read the specs on the GamePort, it states:
QUOTE
...the GamePort sports a color back-lit active matrix TFT LCD with a resolution of 480 by 234 pixels...

WTF?!? Who builds a "retro" gaming handheld and puts a screen with that kind of resolution on it? Wouldn't the "perfect" screen be 480x360?
