I'm 15 years old and I talked my parents into getting me a gp2x for christmas a couple weeks back. I know I'm getting it and a 2 gig card on sunday but I'm beginning to regret this as I have come to realize from reading about emulators on gp2x wiki that I don't know how to do any of this. I live in a fairly computer challenged family and would like to try to learn more about coding through this but as of now I'm pretty much clueless on how to get emulators running let alone do anything with this awesome device. If I can get it up and running though (this is where you guys come in) it will be more than worth it.

I hope to run:

-Nes(Final Fantasy, Zelda, Dragon Warrior)
-Snes(same stuff)
-Scumm(Monkey Island, Loom, Indiana Jones)
-Doom
-Quake
-Marathon/Alephone
-perhaps some incarnation of the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy game

Thanks much,
Patrick Gilfether

well patrick, I think your first step should be here: http://gpnewbie.com/.

After that, i'd suggest trying your luck here: http://gp2x.projectinfinity.org.uk/news.php

Scan through these websites and get to know them first. The problem with your question is that it looks like you are in need of a more "in depth" introduction to the machine first. After that, I'm sure you'll have the answer to most of your questions. If you have any more, THEN i'd have another go at this forum. There are so many awesome folk on this forum that can help you with basically everything, but i'll also let you know that they'll be quick to get on your case if you aren't clear with your questions (nor done your homework). Another thing you should do is check out the stickies on the top of all the forum subgroups. They're there to answer the most common questions people have. This device is really awesome, but not so user friendly (although i'm sure you'll love it). Welcome to the community.

here's a good list: http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showtopic=24562
and yet another: http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showtopic=20717

Okay...so you've got a lot of reading... enjoy!

Try some emulators on your PC then, if you're afraid you won't be able to figure it out. They pretty much work the same. You can also try some game interpreters (i.e. SCUMM).

Basically, everything you need to know is in the readmes of any program you download for the gp2x just like many programs for your computer. With emulators, you basically use "roms" which are images of console or computer games. Just copy the emulators over to the sd card through explorer to whatever directory the readme tells you, then copy the roms to the folder that the actual emulator comes with for the particular roms or if it specifies in the readme, create one. Remember that you can only use roms of games that you own. The same things apply for basically all programs. Just read the readmes. ;) If you need help, don't hesitate to PM me. I even did the graphite speed mod on my original GP32 (that was amazing!). Anyway, I'm getting my GP2x for Christmas I hope as well as a 2gb card. Good luck.

Sounds awesome. I can't wait till tomorrow. I started setting up a nes emu and roms and that seems to be fairly simple. Hope your christmas goes well.
