Lid Sensor

I wonder how the lid sensor actually works.

I can only imagine by closing the lid, the LCD cable gets rolled tighter which increases its inductivity, which can be measured.
 
A Hall sensor and a magnet, if my memory is correct :)

Thanks! I just found it. The sensor is on the right, in front of the fire buttons and gets triggered by the speaker.

I've put a magnet on that spot and the display turned off.

The right speaker is the magnet, the sensor is in the lower case at the same relative point.
 
I know that recent Nintendo handhelds use magnet and sensor, since if I stack my DS lite and my 3DS together, one of them turns on.

Hah, just figured out how the Pandora works - it uses the speaker magnet to activate a sensor on the main board.  No wonder I hadn't spotted a discrete magnet!
 
^ Yep. You can demonstrate this by waving a weak magnet around near the ABXY buttons, causing the screen to turn on/off
