I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not (and my apologies if this has already been discussed!) but I was wondering maybe an intresting alternative to firefox 3 on pandora might be the "dillo" web browser. It appears to have receives some activity just recently (october) and there's source avaliable too (latest version 2.0, dated 14 Oct 2008).

Only thing might be FLTK2 which dillo depends on -- I'm guessing that would run ok on pandora. BTW (as a test) I compiled dillo for my 64-bit linux distro (slamd64) and all seems to be working :) .

I think it would be fairly easy to port, although dillo lacks a lot of the features which other browsers have, including javascript, flash, etc. although it is a lot faster.

As I've looked fairly extensively at browsers, here's my take on them:

Dillo: OK rendering, FAST, interesting bookmark/menu setup. Not ideal as your only browser.

Links 2 X11: Slightly worse rendering than Dillo, slightly slower as well, fewer deps, nice keyboard control, better bookmark system. Bonus CLI mode, not ideal as your only browser

Firefox: Slow, great rendering, addons (Yay AdBlock!). Large, memory-hungry. Supports plugins. Javascript support (good or bad depending on your view)

Epiphany-Webkit: Lacking features, great rendering, little plugin support. Slightly faster than FF, definitely less memory-hungry

Fennec (not tested much at all): Seems snappy, nice touchscreen interface (opinion, never tested on an actual touchscreen), renders well.

NetSurf: Somewhat slow (re-renders a good deal before finishing), good rendering, odd deps. Pretty decent.

My opinion (based off of using the Nokia N810 and the Zauruses with these browsers, Fennec excluded, neither of these devices is comparable to the Pandora in terms of memory or processing power) is that Dillo is the best for general browsing closely followed by Epiphany-Webkit. Links 2 is a nice fallback browser, and FF has been too heavy (IMO) for every embedded device I've owned.

Netsurf is too slow and re-renders too much for me to like it.

I think a Webkit browser would be amazing if they managed to build it like Dillo without the Gnome deps.

Anyway, I hope somebody finds that useful.

Fennec has a great UI for a small screen, so much so that I hope it gets developed for netbooks too. But right now it's seriously buggy and slow on my N800. It's definitely not ready for primetime, but it will be a great browser when it's all finished.

Hi,

What about Kazehakase ?

Screenshot

-Based on Gecko
-Uses GTK
-Dynamic bookmarks
-Tabs
-No add-ons atm
-Different interfaces for beginners, average users and experts

Bye, Magic Sam

EDIT: WebKit is also available as a rendering engine, WIP though...

Dillo is a truly incredible browser. For a long time I have decided that if I get any serious amount of spare cash to invest in an open source project dillo would be it.

Some more interesting alternatives might become more polished in the future, like Arora or Midori.

When doing some heavy compiling (i.e. linux kernel and openembedded at the same time), I can't even move the mouse in X11, but I can still browse with links2 in framebuffer mode. Tiny, fast browser, supports javascript (partially?). Quite nice actually, though it won't work for many sites (flash, ...)
