Hello,

I thought that I would also post my tech support question on this forum in the hopes that someone might be able to help further.

Since receiving my 2nd Pandora, my USB port has not been working.. I have tried all my USB sticks as well as new and old mice but nothing so far has worked.

Seems power is going to the periferals as their lights turn on but my Pandora is not recognizing them.

Here is my latest DMESG after plugging in an old USB 1.1 mouse.

DMESG

I read on various Linux forums that others, who had simular issues with their USB ports shared the same "hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device" error. They found that there was problems with the ehci_hcd module.

Some suggested ways to dissable the module but I belive that hci_hcd is a part of the Kernel and is not separate module.

Not knowing much about what I am talking about, I could be totally off base

Thank you in advance.

David...

Well, you need a proper USB 2.0 hub if you're getting the "unable to enumerate USB device" thing, as I understand it - that port is USB 2.0 only.

Well, in my case I've been unable to use the USB 2.0 port (except for powering a led lamp :p ). And I've tried plugging several 2.0 devices (sdhc readers, hubs) . I even purchased in amazon a small hub that some people in the gp32x forum confirmed as working with the pandora. But nothing.

When I plug it in my laptop:

Code:
[297235.027860] usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2

[297235.152632] usb 1-5: New USB device found, idVendor=05e3, idProduct=0608

[297235.153186] hub 1-5:1.0: USB hub found

[297235.153504] hub 1-5:1.0: 4 ports detected

When I plug it in my just reflashed pandora (just turned on after inserting the battery):

Code:

wow, that's new, before reflashing to HF4 it only showed 1 line. Now I have to unplug it for the flood to stop <_<

Not sure where actually to post this (and I may have posted it before), but if I reboot my Pandora with a USB hub attached, the initial boot-up hangs just before the progress bar fills completely! Might this be something to so with startup scripts that trip up coz there's extra devices on the system? I'm a complete Linux newbie, so my feet are indeed only getting wet in it!!

Well, you need a proper USB 2.0 hub if you're getting the "unable to enumerate USB device" thing, as I understand it - that port is USB 2.0 only.

Common misconception here. USB 2.0 is NOT enough for a device to work on the Pandora. It has to be HIGH SPEED, which is a completely different story and only remotely related to the "version numbers". The way I understand it, USB 2.0 devices work on UHCI/OHCI/EHCI, but only the high-speed ones work on EHCI. The usual USB 2.0 port on your computer has BOTH controller types inside, but the Pandora's only has a EHCI and therefore absolutely requires high-speed.

I know all that. My bad for forgetting to add the High Speed part. :p

Was curious to see what mice do work when plugged directly into the PAndora (I've a Microsoft one that'll only work thourgh a hub, it's no biggie, but was simply trying things out!), so I plugged in a Logitech wireless one, instantly my screen went dead and the whole Pandora crashed! Had to remove the battery to get it to reboot, but when I put it back in the logo appeared all garbled and the machine refused to boot up properly. Took me many efforts and swapping between my 2 batteries (hadn't used the spare battery before then), before I could entice the poor thing to boot up properly! Has anone had any problems with the internal battery connectors not making complete contact? This was what I thought must have happened, that I had misaligned one of them taking the batteries in and out (the console booted up happily enough with no battery using the power cable)

^ Yep, some people have had issues with the battery contacts. I believe it's due to the soft/wrinkly nature of the wrapping, it's wrinklier for some than others. It can be solved with a folded piece of paper or something like that, placed on top of the battery before you put the cover back on. Not an elegant solution but worth trying.

I should have remember that fix from my PSP days, had some tissue paper living inside the battery case for a long time!! Was more afriad that I'd dome something to bork the Pandora completely! Could a dodgy connection explain why the Pandora died when I plugged in the mouse and it drew power from the socket?

well things got progressively worse today, now my Pandora won't boot up at all using either battery or indeed with the charger or via USB. Guess it'll be going on holidays back to it's maker for a bit of R=R.....

I know all that. My bad for forgetting to add the High Speed part. :p

I noticed that if I boot up fresh and plug in a "compatible" device

(eg usb card reader) it works, but if I first plug in an "incompatible"

device, dmesg gives the compliance complaint as expected BUT when plugging

in the compatible device again, that new device will not work unless I reboot

again. It's like one bad device hangs the usb module until a reboot.

I found that I had more incompatible devices that I thought (usb serial port,

wireless keyboard and mouse dongle, a cheapo hub). The same devices seem to

work ok with a usb2 hub as the mediator. But if I plug one of them in first,

then replace it with my good hub, the good hub won't activate.

^ That's normal. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe that the same also affects other devices using the some SoC.

Interesting. It might also cause some people to report a faulty usb port because

the first device fails, and then they try testing succession of devices.

If they don't reboot, then none will appear to work.

As some people have stated, the USB host is HIGH SPEED ONLY, but the OTG port can also be used like a host, and it is LOW/FULL/HIGH speed compatible. The only problem with it is the OTG port can only supply 100 mA. So to put it all together:

Code:
                   _______________________________________

                  | | |

                  | HOST | OTG |

 _________________|_________________|_____________________|

| | | |

|Max. current | 500 mA | 100 mA |

|_________________|_________________|_____________________|

| | | |

|Supported speeds | High speed only | Low/Full/High speed |

|_________________|_________________|_____________________|

To use as Host the OTG port, you need one of these cables:

- AB to mini-B

- AB to female A

Due to the low power the USB port is able to supply, it cannot be used with high power devices (i.e. the Sony Playstation 3 controllers), but most keyboards and mouses should work.

Keyboards and mouses are low speed devices, so to use them you need a HIGH SPEED USB HOST. Full Speed hosts will NOT work even if they are 2.0 compliant.

I did some tests with both ports in this thread and I can confirm both ports work but with the restrictions I wrote in the table.

Also, it looks like the OTG port doesn't automatically configure it as a host, so to enable it you need to write some commands:

Code:
# sudo su -

# modprobe g_zero

# echo host > /sys/devices/platform/musb_hdrc/mode

Also other problem I had is that if you plug to the USB host a non High Speed device, the port hangs and will not work until you reboot the pandora, even if you plug low/full speed devices.
