Samsung Smart Window

I noticed a few things:

  1. Its nothing special, they just left the back layer off an LCD
  2. Notice how it runs incredibly "appliance" like software
  3. Why do I want a tiny computerized clock on my window when I can have a big, robust one on my wall
  4. ditto calendar
  5. So the kid next door put a football through it - whoops, there goes £1500
  6. How the &%$* is this better than mounting a tablet on the wall next to your window
  7. How much energy does this use?
  8. If I have a computer screen in my wall, why does it display a view of the house across the street
  9. That's quite a small window
  10. What happens when it gets old? Replace the entire window?!
  11. No its not future technology, its almost useless and bound to cost a fortune!
  12. Why isn't there someone with technical knowledge behind the mic
  13. What's wrong with real blinds?
  14. What happens when I shut it down for the night?
  15. How many people would actually buy this?
  16. why,
  17. Why.
  18. WHY!

Ohhh, I must've missed these in my daily tech site scanning! That's quite awesome. I'm'a have some fun with Binky's questions. :D

  1. Yup
  2. I'm ok with the "appliance-like" software
  3. You can probably turn it off and make it just run blinds.
  4. ditto to #3
  5. Probably rich neighborhood... the parents will pay for the damages.
  6. You could have both. :) And a tablet can't shade your window.
  7. Probably not much. Most of the energy used in screens is the backlight, I believe. The processor to run this, on the other hand...
  8. This was likely meant for applications where a backlight is readily available, so a window looking out, or a storefront from outside at night, those are very likely possibilities. I doubt you'd mount this on just a plain wall.
  9. They could probably scale it, or you'd build your wall around this. 4 windows to make one big one? maybe more.
  10. Probably could. If this is the future, this kind of thing might be readily available. Maybe it has a standard display input as well.
  11. It might cost a fortune, but they're probably targetting people with money anyway.
  12. Do you need one for this? Were I to guess, it's just like WizardStan said, an LCD panel without a backlight, and probably another layer for capacitive touch, and possibly a glass back (gorrilla glass front and back would be nice).
  13. They collect dust and cats get stuck in them.
  14. Probably goes transparent, but if they're using the kind of tech that keeps the liquid crystals in the last state they were in with power, you could probably just lock it at black.
  15. I would, if I had money.
  16. because it's cool,
  17. Because it's like teh future.
  18. BECAUSE THEY CAN!

The only thing I disagree with on what that woman said in the 2nd vid, I really doubt this is a one way visibility thing, unless they have some new technology that can direct light in just one direction (without a mirror on the other side). For example, if it's night and the light is on inside, I'd bet people outside can see what's on the display. Might be kinda cool to have an outside movie night thru the windows tho.

I suppose people would be worried about it being two-way because they like watching prawns on their £lots window pane...

Lol that would be a concern... I would probably do naughty things with it. Like on a cold winter day write "LICK ME" on it and see how many kids I can get stuck there, or put a video of two people doing it against the window and display it at night only to turn the sprinklers on when people stop to watch. xD

Might make for some really interesting Christmas time light displays. I'm still waiting on a full-display transparent OLED window. :D

Yes. And, of course, your new Samsung Smart Window doubles as the viewport for the aiming system.

Prometheus, maybe you should get one of these for your bedroom. It might look lovely.

^ To be quite honest, I'd wonder how cold climates would affect such a thing. :p Seems expensive and frivolous to me, given that.

Very basic physics lesson coming up.

Interesting fact: liquid crystal doesn't block light, they polarize it (force it to "rotate" in a specific direction) as it passes through them. The darker the colour, the more polarized (rotated) it becomes. In order to actually see the light, vs other non-polarized light, a second layer is required in front of the crystal. So an LCD monitor consists of backlight->liquid crystal->polarization mask, with the polarization mask only letting through light that has been rotated, and the more rotated the light is the darker that colour of that light: white is rotated to 90 degrees, black is rotated to 0 degrees (or the other way around, I forget) with shades of grey in between. This leads to an interesting trick you can do: if you open up an LCD monitor and peel off the mask in the front, all you (or anyone else) will see is a blank white screen. If you then cut glasses-shaped lenses out of that polarization layer and stick them in some frames, you can make a screen that can only be seen while wearing them. ;) Be sure that you mount the lenses correctly. Rotating the mask 90 degrees results in the opposite polarization: white becomes black, green becomes purple, red becomes... whatever blue and green make... yellow I think? And all vice versa :p You can see this if you own some of the more expensive polarized sun glasses. Look at the screen and you'll notice some of the colours go weird, especially if you start tilting your head to the side.

This has the convenient effect of working the other way as well: unless someone puts a polarization mask against the outside of the window or are wearing special glasses like I'm sure you're all going to build now, no one will see what you're looking at; it's all just a mash of white light, some of which is rotated to 0, some rotated to 90, most in between, but except for a very few people, our eyes can't see polarization, all they'll see is white. It's only with the addition of the mask that the 0 degree light is blocked and the image becomes clear.

edit: clarified LCD vs the liquid crystal inside it.

I've played with polarized light before, taking apart old calculators, pagers, and such, but since I've never seen the opposite side I'd always thought the light going both ways thru the filter was polarized, especially since I recall seeing shadows created by the shapes displayed on the background of LCD screen. But if it's true that the light only polarizes on one side, then bring this on. I could watch porn on a transparent, one way screen and none would be the wiser. :D

Prometheus how much for the water cannon? Can I get the two bundled together XD?

The Neighbour Kid Water Cannon Targetting System is just £1359.95 - that's only or $2102 US, or $2125 Canadian! Bundles are available, with a discount if both the Neighbour Kid Water Cannon Targetting System and the Samsung Smart Window are fitted at the same time!

...Hydrogen Monoxide kills hundreds of thousands of people every year!

But there are many people regularly exposed to Hydrogen Monoxide that die of unrelated causes. In fact, it's been found that some people deprived of even minute quantities of Hydrogen Monoxide will dye within days! The research is, at best, inconclusive.

There is, however, one thing linked to 100% of all deaths. Every person that has died was also born. It's an epidemic! Can't you see? We must halt all births before everyone on the planet dies.

This looks pretty decent to me, nice to have a good view out a window in a room that has no windows

hum, I guess this is for you...

I want to make myself a privacy screen and glasses now, that's a nice idea. Wonder if I could do it without destroying myself opening a monitor. An old post about building arcade cabinets and monitors holding deadly power even when unplugged made me think twice.

This is a nice effect though.
