The Communication Cube

You know, falling births used to be one of my largest worries, but these days I'm more into immediate doom. If anyone still has a taste for this stuff though, the CDC just put out a report that says America saw a 4% birth decline in 2020, the largest decline since the 1970s, and the lowest birth rate ever. Total fertility, births expected over a lifetime, has also fallen to 1637 per 1000 women.

That remembers me of a night that got unpleasant a few hours in. Don't take 'em if you don't need 'em.
Especially not off-brand ones, you can never be sure of the actual active ingredient amounts.
Turns out those pills work really, really well.

On a similarly carnal note, I started making my own Pretzels. All proper with caustic soda and I am just in awe how idiot proof and delicious it is. I need to be flogged for not trying this earlier. Wurstsalat season is open!

I've heard it referred to as lye before now, but it turns out that's the same stuff as caustic soda or at a push caustic potash. I reckon caustic soda alone should do the job just fine.

No, that's a pansy-assed chemical you add in place of yeast which in the presence of anything acidic produces carbon dioxide, ideally in tiny little bubbles distributed through the dough. According to wikipedia the act of washing the surface of the dough with sodium carbonate (washing soda) or sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) causes the maillard reaction to occur which is a kind of wonder reaction that makes the mmm in coffee, whisky and all kinds of roasted goods.

No U.

Inb4 someone says you can use lye in the pretzel manufacturing process.

I know you can. ;)

Always remember, don't post anything useful if you can't extract it from a service and take it with you to use elsewhere.

Only six more days until the National Hurricane Center starts issuing advisories for the Atlantic. Over in the Pacific, the season got started six days early with Tropical Storm Andres. I wonder how early the Atlantic season will start, since technically the start is still supposed to be June 1st.
