What exactly does it do and why does no one ever discusses it here on the forums?
 
It upgrades the OS as part of the system settings.

Would be good if there would be any news what will be updated if I use this option.

I hate those blind updates.

It updates parts of the OS installation on the NAND like if a new package version of preinstalled software is added/available or bugfixes for Pandora specific customizations (mostly scripst, I guess) are deemed releaseable.

It comes up in some threads from time to time - why do you think it needs more discussion about it around here ?

No, I just found it funny that there could be changes in the OS without people wanting to discuss it here, I goes against the nature of the forums :)
