Mega drive, it was..... the best console tech wise
Wow, it's like people have this complete inability to understand that there's these things called "facts".....
It is a fact, the megadrive was much faster then the SNES, this is plain to see in multi format games where the megadrive one would be much better then the SNES one.

My point exactly. Just because not all SNES games used the full potential power of the console doesn't make the console inferior.

But I don't feel like typing the SNES stats out again. I already did it a few posts ago.

What you said is the rough equivalent of "My Celeron 700 Mhz with onboard graphics and sound hardware is faster than your Pentium 350 upgraded to 2.2 Ghz with a RADEON 9700 and a SB Audigy, cause all that matters is that it was officially 350 Mhz when you bought it!!!"

Why do you think that happened eh? Because sega abondoned the mega drive while nintendo ploughed the SNES for all it was worth. Sega focused on the Saturn and gave mega drive users the cold shoulder while Nintendo kept the SNES going and dropped the price to $100 in 1996 here in Aus i think and it sold like hotcakes because most people couldn't afford the $699 price tag for a saturn or playstation.
Plus all the "kiddy" looking games were an ideal choice for soccer mums to buy a Snes over a MD.

BTW the sound was much worse on the mega drive for whoever said it was better. However when properly programmed like in the streets of rage games, the sound quality was great. Everyone seems to like the Snes for RPGS. But when I was a kid I couldn't be bothered playing RPGs and the games on mega drive seemed cooler. Though the SNES was a great (ugly) machine with (ugly lol) controllers too. Also you could play sms games on the MD with a simple converter and if u were a pad short, you chucked in another sms controller for 2 buttons lol or a md controller in an sms. IT worked :)

Finally the super FX chip was so ridiculously crap. It couldn't even give doom a good conversion while the STD chip i think it was called gave us Virtua Racing a splendid game.

I must admit I preferred VR to Star Fox and the FX racing game (I forget the name). You did need a mortgage to pay for it mind.

EDIT

Although saying that you could say the same about SF 2 Turbo on the Snes - another expensive yet fantastic cart. :)

Regardless Sega abandoning the Megadrive, those are still pretty stunning results, aren't they? Do you think Sega would've come even close to closing in on Nintendo if they'd continued with the system, and not ploughed on toward less successful consoles? I doubt it.

Also, the "kiddy" games comment was a good point. And price does matter, but not nearly as much as what has the best one or two games going for it. In the end, I think the kids ultimately get what they want in the world of video games -- which is not always what their soccer mums want them to get.

Or maybe the SNES was just better.

Oh, and I've always wondered, what the hell is a soccer mum?

the FX chip was a revolution for home consoles.

the FX2 was amazing (ever play star fox 2 for snes, wow)

but still just look at he figures they are huge, they demolished the genesis.

and sega didn't plow the genesis! there where 3 VERSIONS OF THE GENESIS for gods sake! if thats not plowing i don't know what is!

sega 32 was shit, one good game (doom) doesn't make an addon.

the THREE versions of sega cd where shit!

the saturn was shit. a few good games can't make up for a technically flawed console.

SEGA was SHIT!!!!!

except for the DC, that was a good console.

Except Doom doesn't use the Super FX chip. It uses the Super FX2.

And comparing Virtua Racer and Doom is pointless. They have completely different graphics engines. The fact that the SNES can even run the Doom engine is amazing. Compare the Doom engine that to any of the Megadrive 1st person shooters (Zero Tolerance, Blood Shot, or "Duke Nukem 3d" - all of which have a Wolfenstein 3d level engine, if that.) and you'll see what I mean. If you want to make comparisons with Virtua Racer, compare it to another polygon-based racing game like Stunt Race FX

SEGA:

Shenmue
Virtua Fighter
Sonic (2D ONLY)
Space Harrier
Echo
Virtua Tennis/VolleyBall/Rally/anything else
Panzer Dragoon
F-Zero GX (ARGHHHHHHHHH confusion)
Triforce Arcades

Nintendo:
Mario World
Pokemon
Pikmin
Metroid
Donkey Kong
Mario Tennis/Golf/Party/ anything else
Smash Bros.
F-Zero GX (ARGHHHHHHHHH confusion)
Triforce Arcades

They are friends now (read: Triforce) so lets bury it

BTW: it was easier to list Nintendos

I've said it beofre and I'll say it again; I hate arguing about consoles in the past. However, although I adore the SNES I'm also a HUGE fan of the Mega Drive.

It seems to me though that unless you owned both consoles at exactually the same time you will be even more biased than ever.

note how you didnt read end of post i said DC was a great console, its just ports from arcades and rehashed ideas don't really wow me.

but sega in the arcades are only second to snk.
