Additional Questions & Suggestions to help generate more pre orders.

As long as I get notified of incoming messages, cool. I could probably figure out how to do outgoing stuff fairly easily.
That's actually the part I'm unsure of. I will know more once I actually have a Pyra. I hope ED sees my post about the reseller, as that will greatly help in actually making sure the 4G units get produced.

Most likely the modem can be monitored somehow and a shell script can hook into that, and then print them to the terminal.

Make sure it plays a sound file, vibrates, and changes the lid LED color. I wish I had one to try figuring some of this stuff out.

while true; do check_for_messages; sleep 10; done

I'll leave the implementation of check_for_messages for someone interested to fill in.
I'll try! Most of what I've seen involves AT commands. I wonder if there's a command to tell it to send a signal when a message comes in.

Possibly, but polling is probably easier to implement first.

Mr_Loon's fear mongering and decent sowing passive-aggressive trap
There is no fear mongering or dissent here, just an entirely logical set of questions that if answered might generate additional pre orders.

If you wish to be helpful yourself then please try to lose your knee jerk response of personalised nonsense to any sort of suggestion that things are not being done in the best way possible, in terms of generating sales / profits.

There's a number of response codes which will signal that there's some information. If you just listen to the tty device you'll get "RING" for an incoming call, and "NOCARRIER" if the signal is lost and it can't reconnect. The manual says there's one for SMS receipt as well but it needs to be activated and I haven't read enough to understand how that works. If I actually had a device in front of my to try some of these commands and see first hand what the output is it'd be so much easier.

If it helps your nerves at all, I'm in for more than double what you paid and ordered when there was a lot more risk involved. I'm confident that ED will deliver on the hardware.

To set expectations, keep in mind that the software is going to be pretty rough initially. For example, although a unit may be equipped with the mobile radio module and all of it's sensors, having an interface for it to send a text message may be months out. (hypothetical example - for all I know this already works and someone may have the perfect interface). The more Pyras, the more people using them, the more likely that things get developed - it's a symbiotic cycle.
One of the first thing I hope i'll be able to do is to use my Pyra as XB360 controller in Bluetooth or wired mod

C'mon guys, stop fighting like a bunch of angry kids.
Sorry dad, we'll be good I promise ;)

Just to be 100% clear on the purpose of this question : When do you plan to find out if the 4GB Version works correctly + what impact it has on battery life & performance (compared to swap file)?

I believe that it would be better if in stead of just saying 'It's not 100% clear that we'll create a 4GB RAM version, so if we won't produce one, you'll (FILL IN THE BLANK) the 2GB version.' a brief explanation of the reason why it's not 100% clear was given and also letting people know when it will become 100% clear would also be helpful.

Arghh... I knew this response was coming :p

A valid point in my opinion. Current story is vague at best.

Maybe you missed the warning about the 4GB models on the shop pages.
No, I did not. But you missed to place all the words, when you coded your statement. ;P
EDIT: It just came to me, we probably didn't see the same shop pages. Now I got it at last. :)

Thing is, while just sending the 2GB customers 4GB units would make logical sense, you would have to remove the 2GB options at the same time as announcing the decision, otherwise, you'd end up with people buying them in the hope of a cheap 4GB unit.

Ideally he'd remove them as soon as he decides not to make them.

it's a little too early to be speculating after just one week of preorders... but ED will make a good decision, and will let the 2GB people know the options (or just give them what they pre-ordered, with some sample RAMs).

OK, I've had a quick proof read of the Pyra Pre Order page, there are quite a few typos and few instances of 'unusual' though correct English, almost as if the person who had written is was not a native speaker, perish the thought ;)

Any suggested changes are in red, it will hopefully be obvious if the suggested change is one of linguistic style, typo correction or perhaps a bit of added salesmanship.

@ The community : Please feel free to suggest better wording and please try to spot any more typos etc. I'm no expert writer / profe reasdrer. I'm just giving it my best shot from the perspective of if I was someone who was not familiar with the project what would I expect to see here to make me want to back the Pyra.

@EvilDragon : 572 pre orders and rising Woo Hoo ! Hope the following is of some use to you, I can't code etc. but like to be able to help the Pandora / Pyra project where I feel able to do so.

DragonBox Pyra - The successor of the OpenPandora

The Pyra is the vastly improved successor of the OpenPandora.
A way faster CPU, 5"-HD Screen, backlit keyboard.

The Pyra revolutionises mobile computing by being the first genuinely upgradable pocketable system. The CPU and display PCBs are socketed!
This means there is no need to buy a new device every few years - you can simply update it with a new CPU board or improved display when it becomes available. This makes the Pyra a lot cheaper for those who play the long game and also takes care of the environment!

More information about the Pyra can be found on the official homepage!
This is the official preorder of the DragonBox Pyra.
Please read carefully before placing your preorder!

* The payment for the preorder is a DOWNPAYMENT! The final payment will NOT be necessary before the device is ready to be shipped. If you'd like to pay more upfront, please add a shop voucher to your order which you can then use when the final payment is needed. The downpayment as well as the vouchers are WITHOUT VAT.

* We cannot say for sure when the delivery will happen. In case any issues occur, we’d rather fix them than rush things out. We think we'll be able to deliver the Pyra sometime this year though!

* Be aware that there is ALWAYS a certain risk with such crowdfunding / preorder projects. We already have working prototypes, so it's unlikely the project will fail especially as we already have enough preorders to ensure that production will go ahead, the risk shouldn't be too high, but I just wanted to point that out.

* If you have further questions, you might find some answers in the Preorder FAQ, can ask at the english boards or visit the official website. Or, of course, you can ask us here at the shop.

* If we are in the position to offer different case colours to choose from you’ll be able to select the colour you want with the final order.

*I want to personally thank you for your support with your preorder. I and the team have invested A LOT of time into the Pyra. Your support will help us to bring the Pyra to life!

Versions and final prices of the Pyra:
ALL versions have the same technical specs like CPU, LCD, storage, WLAN, etc. You can check the specs at the product page and on the official Pyra website.

The Mobile Edition adds mobile internet (3G/4G), as well as additional sensors (GPS, Altometer, Hygrometer, Barometer, Compass).

There are 2 versions of the Pyra Mobile edition, one supporting the US-Frequencies and one supporting the EU (and mostly worldwide) frequencies.

* Pyra Standard Edition, 2GB RAM: 500 EUR without VAT (=595 EUR incl. VAT)

* Pyra Standard Edition, 4GB RAM: 529,41 EUR without VAT (=630 EUR incl. VAT)

* Pyra Mobile Edition, 2GB RAM: 600 EUR without VAT (=714 EUR incl. VAT)

* Pyra Mobile Edition, 4GB RAM: 626,05 EUR without VAT (=745 EUR incl. VAT)

If you buy 2 or more Pyras, you will receive a 5% discount for the final payment.

If you live within the EU, you have to pay the prices including VAT.
If you live outside the EU, you pay the prices without VAT, however, depending on the country you live in, you might be charged some import tax.

Please also consider the following :
  • Adding project goals & a running total of the pre orders to date.
  • Mentioning what the likely default colour of the Pyra will be if no choice is available.
  • Making the web links clearly visible.
  • Clearly stating if the price quoted includes delivery and what the delivery charge is likely to be (if applicable).

Thanks! Always great if some native speaker helps me out :D

Adding project goals & a running total of the pre orders to date.

Would love to, but we first need to change the layout of the preorder live statistics page so it fits nicely

Mentioning what the likely default colour of the Pyra will be if no choice is available.

I don't know that yet. We will decide once we have the different samples available.

Making the web links clearly visible.

Fixed.

Clearly stating if the price quoted includes delivery and what the delivery charge is likely to be (if applicable).

Added.
