Hi

I've been having loads of trouble trying to get save positions to load in Captive. The game allows me to format a disk image and then make a save position onto it, but when I try to load it back it displays "Loading..." and then freezes.

I had been hoping to continue with a save position that I had previously created using a different Atari ST emulator, but I can't even get save positions created within Captive under Castaway to load properly.

Am I doing something stupid, or is using the save state feature within Castaway the only way that I am going to be able to save my position whilst playing this game?

Hope someone can help :(

Cheers

honnestly I think the best way to save on CaSTaway is the really great function of "Save State" :) it work extremly fine with every games I have tested, & it do the same job than any saves with one more extra : it make the games start sooooo much more faster ;p

so why not using this feature ???? :)

Thanks for the tip. Maybe that's what I should do.

However, I've just discovered that exactly the same problem occurs when I try to land on a planet - It just freezes!

And yet other people seem to say that Captive works 100%

I'm using the latest version of Castaway (13.3) and the 1.02 TOS. Has anyone else had this problem?

Try the 1.32+ edition avaiable on the official website of CaSTaway ;)
usually the 1.32 got a bigger compatibility list :)

see Here for my post about 1.32+ ;)

Links to download are just under here

Thanks, Tidus. Just tried it, but unfortunately exactly the same thing happens - it just freezes when trying to land :(

One of the reasons why I just got my BLU was because I wanted to play Captive on the move. I just don't understand why it works fine for some people and not for others.

Does it matter which disk image of the game you use? I bought the Atari ST version many years ago, but I don't have it anymore, so I'm using a compilation one I downloaded (medway boys I believe)

I wish I knew what I was doing wrong :(

you're welcome ;)

in fact this is an extremly important point in CaSTaway emulator ;) you can also follow this way & find many different versions of this rom & then try them all with both 1.32+ / 1.33 versions... I know it take alot of time, but if someone else got it running perfectly then it's really possible that the problem come from your compilation or your disks files ! & it worth for you to do that search coz it seems to be a game that you really love alot :)

In fact I had the same kind of problem with Transartica some days ago & finaly after I tryied 4 versions I found one which wanted to run on 1.32+ (btw still not working on 1.33 for me lol) ;p It do still have some graphical glitches but it's ok :)
so good luck & alot of courage for your searchs, but btw I'll try to find also this game to help you ;) keep me informed!

Okay, thanks again Tidus :) I will keep trying, although I must admit that I have already tried a number of different roms already

The strange thing is that this exact problem of freezing whilst landing on planets is one which seems to have previously been a common issue, but now the general consensus seems to be that Captive works 100% under newer releases of Castaway

I just wish that I could pick the brain of someone who has either had this problem before and/or has got it working.

Thanks again for any help that you can provide - I just get this feeling that I'm probably the only person who can't get this game to work :(

There is a disk image of CaSTaway which works;l one of the common ones if I recall, but I forget which. (I think the Automation one?) Many of the images do not work however, so definately look around. I think someone has beaten Captive under CaSTaway :) I have a working image.. if you get stuck I can look it up.

Thanks, skeezix :D At least I know for sure that its possible, so I'll keep trying ;)

Unfortunately, Automation doesn't actually include Captive in their compilations, so I guess it has to be one of the other crews, so if you or anyone else is able to point me in the right direction in this respect, then it would be very much appreciated.

BTW, would I be correct in assuming that tos 1.02 is the right one to use, or should I also be trying each Captive image that I can find with different tos versions in the off-chance that it will work? What about other settings like clock speed?

Last but not least, thanks skeezix for a great little emulator :) I probably wouldn't have got my GP32 had it not been for you. I loved my Atari ST :) I wish that I was as good a programmer as you must be. However, I can at least appreciate the vast amount of time and effort you must have put into it.

Keep up the great work, my friend :D

Hummm The TOS 1.02 is the one which got the best compatibility (written by Skeezix in the readme ;p) & obviously 99,9% of ppl follow this idea & use this one :) so surely Captive is working on that Tos (but it's just infear in that case, & Skeezix will confirm or not that it can have better chances of compatibility with other Tos files ;p )
btw Disk images errors are really frequent (at less in my experience) but good luck to find the right ones ;)
and Clock speed have never increase or decrease the compatibility in all the games I have try, it just goes faster or slower or allow u to use music with the extra power of your 166Mhz for exemple, but when it don't want to work then it won't work at any speed ;) [again it's imho]

Edit : ok I admit I've just find & try that game ... and if it can rassure you my version got exactly the same problem here ;p it freeze after landing - but my GP32 don't resets, it just the cursor can't move anymore & nothing will never happen ;p
I'll try others versions / config soon ;) Keep you informed ;)

Edit 2 : I'e try 3 differents files, I've try to load up a save game after landing, I've try to desactivate sound / Fast Render , I've try with different Tos (1.01 / 1.03) & also different speed (near all of those possibles) ....
I've try them out with ver. 1.30 until 1.33 of CaSTaway GP...
=> don't work :( still freeze when successfully landing :(
it's really sad :(

Thanks for trying Tidus :) I've continued trying to get various versions to work too, also to no avail :(

Well, skeezix, if you were able to track down that working image then I would be most grateful. Even if I knew which crew compiled it (if it is a menu disk), then I might be able to download it from somewhere myself ;)

Booted mine up; I annoyingly nbamed it captive1.st and captive2.st :) However, when it boots it has the Medway protector in the boot sector and goes into Superior menu 155.

Checking the ST games database on my site:

SU:155:cace1996 44b48201:Championship Manager 93 (A); Captive (A); Championship Manager 93 (B); Captive (B)

So there you go -- Superior 155 is the working one. I've been using savestates to play it mind you, but she plays fine :)

Well, I got to the fourth mission, but then I lost my save positions when my Smartmedia card stopped working :( I've sent it back and I'm still waiting for a replacement...

Think I'll take backups of my SMC contents in future to prevent the same thing from happening again.

It's still great fun to play though ;)

yeah & save using always a different savestate (I mean alternate from 1 to 9 & then come back to 1 but not many times on 1) coz I already notice some problems which make me lose my save file if I do save always on the same "slot" ... surely it's a sort of limitation of the SMC media ;)
but of course don't forget to backup "sensible" data (ie savestate) it's always more safe & secure ;)
