Apart from the 'cough' N64 emulater, does anyone out there know what we can expect and look forward to next on the emulater scene ?

Another beta of Frodo would be great !

From what I know, there's an MSX1/MSX2 emulator that is being finished up, but I can't give you an ETA, unfortunately. The author was just finishing up the menu's and adding in support for gzipped files last time I talked to him, so I am assuming that it's fairly close. :) :) :)

I know there is a Genesis/MegaDrive emulator in the works, that last I heard ran pretty darn well, but I haven't seen the author around in a while...

Hopefully the authors of gpFrodo and gpEngine will keep up the good work as well. :)

that will take a while cos mame is unoptimized, pretty much. It's infamous for it. At best I wouldn't expect anything more powerful than TMNT to work on GP32 - and probably not even that.

I could swear older versions ran better, but I actually tried a few...nope! My laptop choked! It's a p166mmx and it can't even run Gradius for gods sake! Yet I used to run it on my P150 desktop, and hell, I think I even ran it on my ancient 486dx33...

That's not so bad! I'm looking forward to Track'n'Field and Bank Panic actually!

Ouch... Gradius is pretty basic as far has arcade hardware goes. Looks like Craig has his work cut out for him then. :)

I'd like to be able to have a playable Gorf on the GP32 either via MAME or a dedicated emulation. Crazy Climber and Tron would be nice too.

That's great to hear Snaff! :D

I have a minor suggestion I'd like implemented if it's not too cheeky of me to ask... ;)

Could you please put an "are you sure?" confirmation after selecting debug from the main menu?

Because of the sensitive nature of the control in the menus I find it easy to accidently select the wrong option sometimes.

Snaff ! Pleeeeeeeeese add the restore key on your keyboard I sooooo want to play Lords of Midnight on your emulater !!!!!

Also regarding the MAME emulater, what about Gauntlet !!!!!

Yep, the menu needs some reworking. It was actually only temporary code I put there until I got round to doing it properly, though you can guess what happens with that kind of thing :) It'll probably end up with several separate sub-pages since there's a whole bunch of options that many people wouldn't be interested in.

You can press B to get out of the debug console, btw.

Gradius had the first hardware scaling IIRC...twinbee runs on the same hardware.

Gauntlet on a GP32 tho is unlikely because of the resolution - it's not only odd, but it's too large. I think it's 512x512 (yes, a square). If you've ever seen it or any same period Atari game in action you'll probably remember the different monitor it had (medium resolution). That, and I think it's the Bally/Midway/Williams games like Tapper that had a similar resolution for sprites, and a very low resolution for backgrounds (like 128x128 or something?). Other than that...pretty much nothing is FORCED to (ie, vectors CAN be hi-res). Maybe Exidy shooting games, but...shooting games on a GP32?

Keep in mind a lot of games (I think Gradius is one of them, actually) have vertical monitors. Which is an absolute pain in the ass to rotate on a real cabinet. At least for me.

Just keep in mind some of the most basic seeming games aren't...I mean, Chack'n Pop STILL isn't emulated (unknown hardware?), Bubble Bobble took a good while (16-bit games like Gauntlet beat it to emulator release) and as I said, many shoot-em-ups have vertical gameplay. Which might be okay on a Lynx, but the GP32 isn't very vertical! Still might fit with borders tho.

EDIT: I now officially hate the quote command!

how about flipping the controls/display sideways, a la lynx games? then you've got your vert screen..
