A Nice Thread All About The Psp

(re: Update) Looks like my purchase of a DS was a little premature ... oh what the hell, PSP doesn't have that minigame where you draw lines to help mushrooms move down the screen!

Now that you mention it that dev kit emmulator will probably find it's way onto rhe nevt very soon, once someone hacks the indetification "watermark" out of it that tells sony where it came from. Then someone will come along and bust down a PSP into a UMD reader and then distribute ISOs of the games.

Like I said I see a bigger hacker community attacking this poor machine and raping it violently.

Nah, wooing, buing candy and flowers, and finally, with everyone's concent, de-flowering it... Her... Hmm...

Say, ships are usually female. Even USS Abraham Lincoln. She's a fine ship, she is.

How about game machines? Amiga was female, obviously. Had it been male, it'd have been Amigo... ;)

To everyone paranoid about nintendo patenting emulation of a nintendo handheld on another handheld, don't worry. First, the patent is only valid in the US, second, there is most likely prior art. I think there was a GB emulator for the TI series of calculators, which would count, which would invalidate their patent.

And 'cos the battery is removable, you should be able to get extended life battery packs, like you can for the Can Ericsson Moby's..

Also with its USB connectivity, are we going to see a host of add-ons, e.g. kb, hard drive, eyetoy, dancemat <erm> maybe not that last one.....

Ok i still have a few questions because I am seriously thinking about importing a PSP from japan when they come out 12/12.

So far i know that the Games will Be all region allowing me to play US games on it when they come out here in the states.

I also heard that the UMDs (movies and other stuff) will be region coded.(isnt that gay?) so u will not be able to watch american UMDs when they come out. That would totally suck

My main question is that of the internet capabilities, I heard that the internet protocol is different from the one here in the states. So does that mean that if i import one i will not be able to use the internet with an imported PSP.

If any body can help me with this or would like to add any comments please feel free to do so cause i seriously want to import one so that when ppl here are waiting in line for theirs i can just pop mine out and say im waiting for games. ;)

i wanna know too.
i think i might just wait a tad bit longer just to confirm those things

I dont know anything so dont consider what I say as fact, but here is what I understand:

1. Yes, games are region free. Games from Europe, USA and Japan will work on any PSP bought anywhere. This is confirmed by Sony.

2. UMD movies and music are region locked. Some people speculate that since europe and Jpan have the same region codes (DVD)(as seen on the PSP box), european movies will be able to play on a Japanese PSP. However, USA movies will not. If the first rumour is true, you could import them from europe.

3. The Wi-fi stuff should be standard throughout the whole world. However, it is doubtful (almost certain) that you will be able to play multiplayer games with the same game from a differnet region (i.e You have a jap Ridge Racers you wont be able to play someone with a USA Ridge Racers).

4. If you are worried about battery life, Gamespot have been doing some tests and seem to think that 6 hours is the average time with games - like Ridge Racers. Less for Movies since with movies the disc is always being accessed. Remember though, you can change the battery.

The reason that UMDs will be region coded is because sony has some ideas that they will become the new dvd.

obviosuly blu-ray and hd-dvd already exist to fill this spot but imagine you're a sony exec, the thought that next year people everywhere could be walking around shoving UMDs into portable players is one to make you salivate.

so in order to make this dream more of a reality, region coding is required.

re: internet, there is a british group of hackers who are working on tunnelling the psp but afaik there will be no browser launched with the psp to allow it to access the net.
with regard to local internet configs surely MAC and tcp/ip are worldwide standards so you have no worries?

I'm thinking the likes of Play-Asia and Lik-Sang are going to stick the prices up ridiculously high.

Worrying stuff.
