What do other people use to do their coding on in Linux, or is everyone Windows based. I have tried KDevelop but didn't lile it. Anything else i can try?? :)

That's quite a complicated question that will probably cause the worst flame-wars if posted to the right BBS or newsgroup :)

I do a lot of coding under Linux and I somehow have a different editor for each project I do. I use KDevelop for my biggest project, although it has some annoyances, but I like the tab feature and the compiler integration.

Emacs is an editor for people who are willing to put some time in learning all the complex keystrokes and configuring it right. But as a result, they are efficient as hell and love their editor. (An emotion I don't quite share at the moment but I'm getting used to it.)

If you like editors with a decent GUI, I can also recommend Anjuta, which is a development environment for Gnome with lots of features, so it's comparable to KDevelop.

Some people like pure editors with syntax highlighing that otherwise have no coding features. Examples for this are GEdit (Gnome) and KWrite (KDE).

Finally, there is vim, which I use for GP32 development. It's a little weird (like emacs) and runs in textmode, and provides syntax highlighting. It's quite cool for some quick hacks.

So, the choice of editor under Linux is a matter of taste and if you can't decide which one to use, you will just end up using everything at once, like I do.

Thanks Tob, I will give Anjuta a go. Ill give a test run for a while. Its a shame Dev-c++ isn't available under Linux, because the Windows version looks great on my mates machine. I do like a nice GUI thats why Emacs and Vim scare me.

I use Anjuta too.

I recently had to use MS Visual Studio, and I can say I'm impressed.

I'd like to have a kind of 'intellisense' in Linux too...
