A Quick Review ‘Toby Drummer’

drummer.jpg
Introduction

Hidden in a back room there’s this little lad called Toby. What’s He hiding from? Who knows. Has he enough crisps and orange squash to keep him going through the week? Possibly! You wouldn’t even know he was there, if it wasn’t for the crash bang wallop of his drum kit…

Actually I just made the above up, He’s not hiding in the back room at all, He’s in full glory on the GP32, so what is Toby Drummer? Read on and find out!

What actually is it?

Anyone who is in anyway remotely interested in music, specifically playing the drums will love this little gem. Written by Tobiasz Kozlowski, it’s a drum machine! But one with a difference. You have a little animated stick man who actually plays the drums too!

Graphics

Basic line drawn graphics, that do the job very nicely. They remind me of that old cartoon Roobarb and Custard, as the lines flicker back and forth giving the impression of life in the skinny little fellow. And that’s good as drummers that are still alive are generally rated as a good thing. Dead drummers on the other hand are a little on the quiet side.

4/10

Audio

Very crisp clear samples. He’s obviously taken a bit of time over these. The Kick Drums thump, the Hi Hats are high and hatty. And the tin cans have no beer left, Doh!

8/10

Playability

This is really kewl. Each button on the GP32 has a different drum sound, press the button, and Toby plays the corresponding drum. I must say, He does it rather well too!
You can assign different sounds to each button if you like. You have 30 sounds to choose from, giving you quite a range.
There’s also a built in sequencer, so you can create your own patterns and save them for later playback!

9/10

Conclusion

I won’t drum on and on here (Groan), but I really enjoyed playing with this. It’s simple, and fun! I wonder what it would be like if I plugged it into an amplifier….

Total Score: 7/10

Nice review of what is quite simply a great little drum synth. I play on it quite a lot. Sounds superb through phones or linked up to an amp.

It's one of those programs you show off to mates who aren't really into games (rare but I have a few mates like that)

Heh, yeah it is great for that, I've fooled a few into thinking that it's me playing the intro music :D
Nice review as well! :D

I used it through an amp once at a rehearsal. (no room/time for real drums)

It sounded really good! My bandmates were shocked!

i love this little tool! :)
anyone knows, if this is still being updated?
it would be great if you could use your own samples..

Ace! I didn't even know you could put a GP32 into an amp. GP32 Makeshift Drumkit; yet another great use for the GP32. :D
