Okay seriously is there some kind of trick to this f'ing game or what??? I play a lot of games, and consider myself to be generally good at games, have good hand-eye coordination or whatever, and am particularly good at most racing games, and I've been playing the HELL out of this Wipeout Pure on PSP... and no matter what I do I just seem to suck at it.

So what's the trick??? How the hell do I take turns fast in this game w/o always hitting the walls?? As it seems to me, the only way to win is to hit EVERY speed boost arrow on the ground but even when I manage to do that I just... can't... stay... off... the f'ing WALLS! I try just turning with stick, turning with the stick and holding the air brake in the direction I'm turning, or tapping the air brake, letting off the throttle, staying on the throttle... nothings working, and it's REALLY pissing me off!!!

I did okay for the first two classes but am now on the third class and I'm LUCKY if I can get 3rd place on most races... most of the time I'm quite a ways back and even when I do well... get 1st or 2nd, some jackass always just sticks a missle up my ass very near the end of the race and puts me back in 3rd-4th-5th or whatever.

So really if there is some trick to taking turns PROPERLY in this game or some kinda tip really... so many of you guys talk about this game like it's the best-game-ever... I'm trying really hard to like this game but it's really just pissing me off...

Sounds to me as if the dev has used mind fucking difficulty as a way to add longevity, Wipeout has never been easy (still have the original for the Sega Staurn) but there's usually always a point of equilibrium where you finally get a feel for it.

Your frustration Is beginning to make me feel like I should consider knocking off picking it up at launch.

...uuh what? Wipeout? Sega Saturn?

The problem with any of the Wipeout games is the fact you have no contact with the surface so your basically skating on ice with a rocket strapped to your ass. Try playing it like a rally game, lots of skidding and adjusting and using bursts from your engine to straighten yourself out.

Keep in mind I offer these suggestions: 1. not having played Pure yet and 2. not having play any wipeout game in like 3 years or more.

I just got pure yesterday and some other games. Not really played them much but i remember on the ps1 my mum was really good at wipeout but i was pish. I actually am thinkin about selling the 4 new games a got as i really cant be arsed playin them got too much on my mind. :(

Yeah, you can get both the original and 2097 for the saturn, kinda makes you wonder why they say that wipeout made PS1 cool.

Wipeout on the Saturn was a lot easier than it was on the Playstation, in the Saturn version you could bounce off the walls whilst on the Playstation it would stop you dead.

Makes me feel frustrated just thinking about it

Ah I think I remember the 2097 version....vaguely...

But it was one of the earliest "damn cool" games for the PS1 and aside from maybe a few exceptions just about any saturn port never matched the visual beauty back then.

Use the left and right air brakes to glide round the corners. You could actually scrape the edges of the walls using the air brakes so sparks would fly.

I was a pro at Wipeout 2097 and won a couple of competitions at Silverstone (near where I live) back in the day. Give me Gare de Europa and the Chem Bros. anyday. :)

Now you know how I felt about mario kart double dash on the hardest special cup. "Oh they just MAGICALLY get blue shells everytime i'm about to pass the finish line."

i feel your pain

i don't usually "do" driving games

ridge racer is punishing me for this

repeatedly.
LOL well if you find ridge racer punishing, you won't have a chance at Wipeout LOL. Ridge Racer was damn easy. I'll give Pure a spin when I get it. You gotta use the airbrakes later though. Oh and I never used the analogue only digital pad.

I agree, Wipeout was a HUGE dissapointment to me. The handling is so out there that even attempting to perfect it just isn't fun. The sense of speed is destroyed at every turn; you practically have to stop just to turn a corner. I guess I just don't get it, but I REALLY don't get it.

I'll trade for Ridge Racers or Metal Gear Acid though :)

man, i guess you REALLY have to be a fan to enjoy this, huh?
i love the game through and through, but i was frustrated myself. it's rough at first, but after a while it should get easier to control your ship. and with the flash league it starts to get very hard quick. i know the feeling of almost getting 1st place in the tourny if you weren't struck down at the last lap!

some advice:
go over each track on time trial and try to learn the track better(no hit the walls). make good use of the R/L buttons and that little aerial trick for boost. and maybe stick to the feisar since i find it easier/better than the rest.

later!

edit:
the way to get first in the 3rd league is to leave the other ships in the dust when you pass them. don't give them the chance to missle you, and also learn to go over each track while going over most of the boost ramps w/o hitting the walls!
easier said than done, i know

It's not that its ridiculously hard, it's just not fun. It's too inaccessible and slow to be enjoyable.

inaccessible?
and the game isn't slow at all, if you play well! the only way it's slow is if you hit a wall every 4 seconds.
i don't know, it's as fun as any good old racer to me.

About trying to play it like a rally game... believe me I did approach it with this mentality... the odd thing is, I play and love quite a few PS2 and Xbox rally games and am generally very good at them as well...

In addition I am making liberal use of the airbrake at every turn... as was said above, it seems to me that I have to come to almost a complete stop to make it thru many of the turns w/o banging off the walls... which wouldn't be so much of a problem if my competiton had the same disadvantage!!! I see them just tear thru the turns like it's nothing.

The game is very hard... and I"m only on the Flash league, there are two more leagues to go and I can only imagine that I wont be getting any better as the speed only continues to increase.

Slow... no... inaccessible... yes!

And I have tried using EVERY ship... I seem to have the best luck with the Feisar or Assegai... which is weird as the Assegai is rated kinda low on handling but on some tracks I do fantastic with it... while others I do great with the Feisar... for every track it seems I can only do good with one or the other however.

I'm really... REALLY trying to like this game, and just kept beating my head agains it and managed a bronze medal for the first two tournaments in the flash league with one more to go, the one where you do all eight tracks in a row *UGH*... if I manage to earn a bronze here and unlock the next league and it just get's that much harder I think I'm just gonna sell it back to Gamestop and pick up FIFA or Twisted Metal.

aw man! sucks.
but fifa should be good :D

another tip:
try getting golds in the zone stages. you get a bit better that way.
and turning in advance with the airbrake helps heaps. like 'air drifting' haha.
who am i kidding, this game IS hard. damn ascension!

yeah freakin ascension is a pisser... doesn't seem to be a point to it other than to piss me off... I kept playign and playing and was like F&%@! when is it gonna end!
