I'm new as you can see..

I'm gradually becoming more and more persuaded to buy myself a GP32, just wanted to ask a few questions before I did. I've been lurking around these boards for about a week and havent seen anything that really answers these questions that well..

I've got the choice of getting a console from gbax.com (160mhz blu+) or ebay (unknown mhz, light varies). I'm swayed in the direction of the blu+, and have seen many singing their praises on these boards. However, I'm still slightly worried about the compatibility issues with the diffrent screens to the flus. Lots of posts from late 2004 complain of imcompatibility with popular files and programs, but it is not always easy to see whether or not the issues were rectified since.

What 'popular' programs are still incompatible? Obviously I'm talking the major emulators (genesis, snes, master system, nes, mame etc..) scumm, doom, BOR, gpcinema etc.. I'm pretty sure I read that Dr. MD was fine, but then diffrent sites offer diffrent answers, and sometimes even this board contradicts itself..

Also, is it worth waiting for the 166/180 models to come back? I'm impatient, but don't want to buy into something that isn't as good as it could be. Does 6mhz make all that diffrence?

Sorry if I'm retreading old ground!

All emus work as far as I know. SNES loads up but has a white bar across the screen. It is too slow to play it with sound anyway so it is no loss. All of the others work fine although some emus will have one line at the bottom that is missing but it isn't too noticeable, no big deal, DRMD is perfect.

The screen on the BLU is far better than NLU/FLU so it is the one to get. I have heard GBAX say that 166 MHZ blus are hard to get and his modding service nicked a batch of his GP32s so there may never be any 166Mhz ones from him anymore.

and 166mhz GP32s are no big deal, i wouldn't waste your money.

That`s down to personal opinion, My guaranteed 166mhz (Gbax.com) Blu clocked to 176mhz stable, But now goes 200mhz stable (pencil trick).

Sometimes it maybe worth paying a little extra.

Is there anywhere else you can get 166mhz+ BLUs from then? I'd like to be using the best I can get, but as someone mentioned gbax don't seem to do them right now and possibly not in the future..

Just to check I'm not completely dense..

The "GP32 Taiwanese screen (+)" section is for BLU+ compatibility yeah?

Yep, to clear that up, I have stuck the word BLU on it too!!!

Hi
I received my GP32 166MHz version from GBax a couple of days ago so I assume it is a BLU+ version.

I haven't tried everything yet but here is what I have:- DrMD 2.0, Littlejohn NES (ljgp32 0.4), BOR, GPengine, Rick dangerous and casterway GP. All of these have worked for me perfectly.

The lynx emulator PHandy also displays correctly although when I played Toki the character kept on jumping all the time. This is prbably something I have done wrong but haven't had a chace to ask anyone else if they have the same problem.

With regard to your 166MHz or lower question i would advise you to get the best one you can afford. Bare in mind I had to wait nearly a month to get one from GBax though and they may not get them in again at all. Saying that there hasn't been many prgrams I run at more the 144MHz anyway.

Whatever unit you buy I'm sure you will love it.

NeoGP32 doesn't work either (white line). Not a problem as Rlyeh is releasing his fNGP32 in a couple of months.

:)

STOP SAYING SNES DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY WITH SOUND!!!!

It's all I play mostly and it works great!! You just put a frame skip 3 in and put your sound to 8 bit mono and it works just great at 160mhz

**runs away screaming and ranting about people being haters...

Worldwriter

Which SNES emulator do you use? I think I may only be able to run Snes9xGP 0.97f as I've got a BLU+. I haven't really got involved too much with SNES emulation due to the comments I've read. Would like to try it again with your suggested settings.

Depends on which games you play really. I challenge anyone to get Super Star Wars running with acceptable frame rate and sound.

works fine on mine... sound crackles a little... but it is skipping a frame or two so what do you expect? If you want perfect emulation use a pc... if you want good emulation on the go... that's what your gp32 is for...

i to would like to know what SNES emulator your using.

I use the OPensnes9x v.3 at 166mhz and I can only get one game to play full speed with sound and thats super punchout. everyother game i play will not play with sound at a good speed. these include:

Turtles in time
Rival Turf
SFII Turbo
Super Earth Defense Force
Contra III
Earthbound
Starwars: Return of the Jedi
F-Zero
Super Castlevania IV

I play all those games at no sound and frameskip 1 and they are fine. As soon as I turn sound on, even to the lowest settings it is super slow and i'm sorry but frameskip 3 is too choppy to be deemed as "acceptable"

Kick, I'm not sure, maybe our tolerances are just different, but I have played almost all those games with sound and different levels of frame skip... with no complaints. I'm using the same version you are and only at 160 mhz... maybe our hardware just gives different performance?

So do any SNES emus work on the BLU+? If opensnes has display problems what do other people use? And are there any updates on the horizon?

Only Snes9xGP 0.97f AFAIK. I don't think anyone is working on any updates but I think it was talked about making OpenSnes9xGP compatible with the BLU+ but that was a while back.
