GP32 Dosbox?

Hmmm, pretty cool. Maybe one day we will see a port for GP2x. I had always heard that emulating even old x86 architecture was hard and resource intensive, but I don't know for sure. Falling a sleep now... Zzzzzz...

Even if dosbox was ported well the games playable would be very limited. But it's still something to look forward to

The games playable would be very limited. You're better off looking at ports for some of the later DOS games (Duke3D and Shadow Warrior). I've tried getting games like The Pandora Directive running on my notebook (Pentium M 1.6) and it's very slow. Maybe Scorched Earth would run well, but even that would be better served by a port or someone writing it from scratch.

DosBox would be something I'd really wish to have on GP32 (and GP2X perhaps?). Perhaps it would be possible to have descent speed for very low end PCs, XT/286 and perhaps 386. Perhaps not?

Except from games, I'd personal love to run some old demos on such an emulator. Imagine watching demos like Panic, Cronologia or Legend on this little handheld! But then again, even games like Dune 2, Eye of the beholder and stuff, would be quite managable and requiring only a 286. As for the keyboard, an option in the emulator to attach buttons to specific PC keys or mouse would be ok.

Though, a hard project and quite much optimizing needed. The DosBox needs at least 1 Ghz speed I think to run 386 related stuff smooth. I think..

p.s. Another emulated machine the GP32 is missing: Amiga anyone? How hard would that be..

The GP32 doesn't really have the memory to run an amiga emu at any decent frame rate. The GP2X does however, but only at 10 fps.

There is also a major problem : DosBox is slow as hell even on decent hardware. I cannot even run Gabriel Knight 1 on my Athlon 1.4 GHz loaded with ram (768 MB). It is just too slow.

Amiga emu(original Amiga has got 512kB Ram and 7.2MHz) should run ok, due to a good 68k core (Atari ST emu). Problem may be the resolutions higher than 320x240 and the customchip issues.

I don't know why that DOSBOX is soo slow. Virtual PC on a 350MHz G3 was about as fast as a 50-100 MHz P1 Depended what you did. For DOS Games it was too fast

UAE will not run on the GP32 due to memory problems - believe me, I've tried it :) For some reason, it uses *lots* of BSS. Eg. in addition to the 512KB for the chip memory, 512KB for the kickstart, and 1MB for the disk image, 1MB for sprite buffers, 432KB for the color palette, 676KB for line data, etc... Sure, these figures could probably be greatly reduced with a lot of work, but when it runs fine on the GP2X, are people going to bother?

Maybe Fellow would be a better bet. But there's a lot of work to do there, too.

Actually, people with similar computer power as me, couldn't run DosBox the same way as I do. The sound breaks for them, except if they drop the cycles preety much much low! Perhaps the problem is not the speed here, but problems with diferrent sound hardware?

p.s. UAE on GP2X? W00T!!!

Squidge: Does that mean that you stopped working on your amiga emulation?
