Large Joystick Dead Zone In Gp2x


The deadzone isn't that huge and it should also make dragon punches easier than with standard keypads. It's a bit stiff but thats something that can be fixed easily.

You do however get a huge deadzone if you've got that fault with the stick but it should only be 1 or two directions affected


The dead zone is the same in any direction. I need to press it all of the way to get an input. Maybe the whole stick is dodgy? I don't think it is defective though because all directions behave the same. I think it is just designed that way.

Don't you have to push it all the way on your gp32 as well?

No. My stick is fine on the GP32. I press it half of the distance to get a response.

Some GP32 sticks are sloppy after they get worn though (hence the paper trick). Mine is still great though.

Makes me think when the GP2X stick becomes worn the same way it probably won't resond at all as it is close to that now.

I've had my GP2X a couple of days now and haven't even noticed this 'deadzone'.

There are some problems with Pota's SDL games not registering diagonals properly, but that's a different issue that should hopefully be fixed through code.

You would have to play something that requires fast direction changes to notice. Puzzle games would be fine.

If its designed that way, then I guess this is a matter of preference. I'd prefer a larger deadzone to the thing accidentally setting off directions while in my pocket listening to music. But I can see how it'd get in the way when you have to change directions fast. Again, its a difference, not a defect. Some of us might have a hard time adjusting to it, but some people might like it.

I've had trouble comprehending this 'dead zone' scare. Is this referring to the fact that you have to push the joystick 3mm as opposed to the GP32's 2mm from centre to switch ? If that is the case I am lost for words. Or is it the fact that the spring is noticeably stronger and, combined with that extra mm, it's too much for your thumb ?

Just get gaming and stop bitching and you will develop the required muscles and never give it another thought.

Has noone commented on how quiet this stick is. None of that clicky clicky gp32 sound.
 
digitaljez: That's pretty mush spot-on. It's a little stiffer than the GP32's stick and requires an extra couple of mm to register movement. Really, it's hardly something you're going notice once you get used to it.

It is not a strength thing it is a timing thing. If it takes too long to change direction it effects gameplay and couses imprecise control and frustration.

yeah, i cannot comprehend how slow you must move your thumb for an extra mm of throw distance to have any serious effect

It seems to be made with little clips like most small switches are.

I will give mine the benefit of the doubt when it gets here as I have never owned a handheld console before.

But if I feel that what DaveC says is true, I will open up the joystick and see if I can sleeve the part that presses the microswitches, it can't be all that hard to do.

Maybe a piece of wire insulation or shrink- insulation just the right size can be epoxied on to the shaft. I will check it out when I get mine.

On a similar note, who makes this joystick?

it seems very professional compared to the GP32.

In fact, it seems very professional compared to all of the joypads I have ever opened(NES, SNES, PSX, DC, N64,Genesis, MS sidewinder, etc)
 
I must admit I have noticed it already, it feels quite stiff and even when playing Quake its unresponsive at times. I would prefer a little more sensitivity as I dont expect to have to push the stick all the way across everytime to make something happen, if I were to make a comparision something along the n64 would be perfect.

Im not sure if there will be a fix for this but Im sure people are already working on one if there is and like others have said above its about personal preference at the end of the day anyway.

It most likely can, but don't forget those little clips are actually soldered through to the other side of the board, so you probably need to desolder and remove the joystick from the board before being able to modify it.

I felt the GP32 stick was a little *too* sensitive, moving places I didn't want it to. Even so, it was still the best handheld controller I've ever used. The GP2X one sounds like it could be perfect for me, but we shall see...
