Yes the Sega Genesis Sega Channel!
Such a wonderful device that every school friend with a Genesis I knew had.

So what id like to say is:
Who had one of these when they were young? Or who had one period to say it aint so!

Anyway I remeber we had to return ours constantly since it was so buggy. It had so many glitches and a mere bump could break the thing!

Luckily though, the 4rth or so one we got was indestructable.

Too bad it went out of business due to the glitches.. The 50 games a month was realy cool to have and It allowed me and my bro to play so many games.. It showed me to a few of my fav games such as:

Shining force 2 (it didnt have 1 ;o)
Sparkster
Ristar
Road rash

and many.. many more

I read this thread this morning and it struch me as being a little shit without an explaination or a link.

Oh and I did a quick google myself but I was hungover. Sigh.

Oh and I dont.

The Sega Channel actually made it to the UK, it was only available in south london and Newcastle...they were the test regions. It could only be used if you were a cable user rather than a sky user.

Its basically like a cable reciever thingy that allowed u to play games off it, It mustve had like a hard drive or something then booted em from there once u selected a game from the menu.

EDIT: I think it was like $9.99 a month

Im sure ive seen one of those logos before. However I wasent that into gaming until the PlayStation era (well I'd had a NES/ Mega Drive/ GB - but I wasent really hardcore).

Never had it, shame, I wanted it. :(
Didn't nintendo do this too in Japan with the famicom?
I remember they hosted a nes zelda remake for snes for 24 hours to download.

The real shame with the sega channel was that the cart was flash memory only (the one pictured in this thread is the UK cartridge by the way, the US one looks much different).

Sega used to release demos of games through the service and apparently alot of games were completely different to the current versions, had it been a rom cart we could have seen some great beta material today on the web.

Yes the UK and US one are different, But here in Canada I remember this is the one that finally worked for me without crapping out :)

The US one is a bit different I think, but the games were full version and were the same as normal carts since i remember beating shining force 2 and road rash both on the channel, and the orig cart ^.^

I never heard of any demos being released from this .. meh mustve been to young at the time to remember that.

All and all it went bankrupt eventually due to too many glitches, and it was deemed free for a year after it went bankrupt :p Which was kinda cool.

My brother and law still has one, who knows maybe itll be a collectors itam.

I saw the advertisments and stuff on TV

Never got it though...

Anyone remember the X-Band? The first console modem?

I remember I got it in like 1997 (something like that) I was about 2-3 years too late... :D

Never also got my Dreamcast hooked online...

Wasn't that pay monthly? It was the reason I stuck with the original PSO, IIRC.
