Edge Magazine (uk) Jan 2006 - Full Page About Gp2x

It does read like a rush-job compiled from forums and Lik-Sang's "justifications."

"single analogue stick" frankly destroys any credibility of that entire article. If they had actually used the console, you would have to be the absolute biggest moron in the world not to realize that it is a digital stick. I think this strongly points to them just looking at pictures and making their own conclusions.

The battery life comment is ridiculous. It already gets a longer life than the PSP (which they cream over)! Then you can simply swap AAs and keep playing, ad infinitum. And haven't they heard of *rechargables*?

someone should contact them or post on their forums about this just to point out what retards they are, id like to see them come back with anything after this

Telling them may help via their forum or even trying to get a letter published in their magazine, I know what i'll be saying when they phone up asking for advertising money for Feb...

Edge suck. Edge are mainly a posh mans gaming magazine where it shows off the snazzy and the gleaming! Fair enough, it had SOME good review and views.. but generally speaking they seem to FORGET that its a game they are playing! Graphics this, sound that, presentation this, graphics that.. all their reviews seem to be based on looks and reputation rather than anything else.

If someone says "SEGA" to them, they automaticlal critisize and praise sony by comparing every single effort in the gaming industry to Sony's financial figures. Kind of makes me sick really!

I mean, "...most menu options leading to differently coloured file browsers with otherwise identical functionality."

-what the heck? Is the menu colour realy that important to them?

All it is with edge is to keep its glossy presentation going by ranting about glossy gaming peripherals. Id much rather go to gamespot.com anytime. They seem to prefer actualy gameplay over than nice lookingness.

And anyone who owns a gp32 knows that it has FAR more gameplay than the psp has!
Edge dont know what they are talking about, they get paid to promote their favourite products. thats it.

Nothing good will EVER succeed. trust me on this. The gp2x is amazing, and its exactly what WE want it to be. And in my book that is most amazing.

The thing is with culture today is that companies make SOOO muc hmoney via word of mouth and in your face advertising. All kids do these days is compare specifications to units. I mean, who cares? All i wanna know he specs for is if metal slug can run on frameskip 0 and full sound some day.
Not to say "mine has antialiasing, na na nana naaaaaaaa!"

Ignore edge, just enjoy the comunity here and give gp2x all the support u think it should have!

WOO HOO!

I'd rather mess around with a pice of external HW that's removable then unscrew the case and mess with the innards.

modifying the stick also allowed we to coat it with a rubber substance to improve the grip

I'm totally NOT saying the stick isn't better with a concave and a rubbery surface.

I just pointed out that the physical contact you described is a reversible assembly error.

You needn't open the unit, I said nothing of the kind, I simply LOOSENED the screws, and SHIFTED the board, simply push on the connectors (NOT the headphones; the EXT, USB, and Battery terminals that are connected to the board are sturdy enough) lightly until the joystick is actually centered, then continue with modding the stick.

Making the stick taller doesn't help anything.

On topic, maybe they need to see a real GP2X with Mr. Anderson's skins (so gorgeous) and DaveC's awesome concave stick mod.

Then we can clue them into Sam's Club (or whatever you have it) Energizer mass-market style 2500mAh NiMH batteries.

$20 ( or 10 pounds) Bought me 8 of those batteries AND a charger ("...having to step reluctantly back into that world of disposable power sources leaves a discouraging impression." ) idiots.

Those batteries ran my brothers GBA for 9 hours (with an external light), they get consistently more than 4 with my GP2X

If theres one nice thing about the poor battery handling in the firmware is it gives us an idea of the MINIMUM time of use on batteries, which to me is much more important and useful information then the maximum.

they really shouldnt have done a review on a thing that wasnt even properly released yet, and craig, i hope you give em' hell when they phone asking for advertising money! tell them about all the crap they got wrong etc!

I don't care what anyone says about EDGE magazine UK, I love them! :)

This person should be banned!!

Look at this persons Name, sig, avatar...dumb comment... man o man...
Look at YOUR name, sig, avatar and dumb comment. I'd rather see you banned.

Most print mags suck, EDGE doesn't. Their criticizm is always pretty harsh and I like that. Dumb people should not read it.
However, their GP2X article is certainly nothing to look up to. I would have expected a higher standard of quality.

I just now read the first two paragraphs and lost interest. How much credibility can be given to people who don't even know the first things about what they're reviewing? If this magazine has a user mail section, someone should tell them off nicely. Woogal would be a good candidate as hey dissed his work.

They didn't even mention DrMDx!!!

they have a couple minor facts wrong, but they're going in the right direction with that review.

I have severely mixed feelings about mine too. I have the disappointment associated with wanting something so badly and realizing that it actually meets few of the qualifications I bought it for. It feels as though it cost far more than it its performance level and now that it's in my hands, I spend most of my time with it attempting to 'pump myself up' over it, and it's really not working well.

...and now after the firmware upgrade that magically fixed nothing...

I suppose my feelings will probably change in time, but it's certainly not my favorite purchase right now. I've written my own review, if anybody would like to read it. I have more facts right, but it's not especially positive. I feel it's objective, however.

Some of you people are such fanboys ,i thought that the edge review was pretty fair if the edge had done a bad review of the giz u people would be saying the edge is the best thing since sliced.
GET OVER IT

I agree.

But maybe Edge doesn't realize what it mneans to be homebrew. Okay, the system specs, battery issues etc. are all right, but the fact that they say basically that there's no redeeming qualities about it, especially in the realm of homebrew and ports shows me they know absolutely nothing about it. I hate gaming media, always have, and always will, especially now that next-gen stuff is out there. Everyone's blowing Bill Gates to get a few bucks here and there. I've made a thread in off topic that really holds true to this whole Edge thing.

The way some of you are defending the GP2X makes it sounds like the source of unlimited energy, and therefore solve all problems on Earth at once.

The stick isn't THAT good, its ultimately digital which means a basic D-PAD would have worked better. The screen isn't 100% perfect (check the firmware thread). The batteries that come with it only last 45 minutes, and there is no mains adapter. At the very least a mains adapter should come with it imo. The USB doesn't work on most people's computers either.

As it stands (and thats how you would have to review it), its got many flaws and RIGHT NOW, not too many redeeming qualities. The movie playing, emulators and music playing are all good (but as Edge said, don't meet all the features marketted).

The GP2X is a great device, and will definitely sell well within it's intended market. However, EDGE is targetted at joe gamer. To joe gamer who will want to download a few games and play them - the Edge review is pretty spot on. Maybe commenting on the fact you can use rechargable batteries (£15-£25), buy an additional mains adapter (£10) and an SD Card (£20-£50) it pretty much matches the Sony PSP for features out of the box (altho... at this point it now matches the price too). It doesn't have a large number of commercial quality games (emulators with ROMS excepted), which means to joe game it isn't better than the PSP, or the cheaper DS.

Of course to the niche the GP2X is marketted, its almost perfect. And for this niche, surely a review in a magazine is irrelevant?

your missing the point, sure it has its problems, FIRMWARE related, its been out less than a month or something hasnt it, all firmware bugs *WILL BE FIXED* i can say that confidently, Edge just pissed allover it and didnt leave anything in for recovery, and what are you on about, doesnt meet the features marketted, it meets everything?

No, if they gave a review of the jiz we wouldn't say anything. Because we don't care about the jiz.

Just a quick point out that most of the original home and arcade video games this emulates were originally played with a digital stick.

It is nice the GP2X is bringing back that retro feel of a digital stick to stuff like montezuma's revenge(which I actually played off a 5.25" floppy on a apple //e with a joystick).

Also it interesting to play games like Sonic with a stick for a change.

Feature list:

Replays MPEG 4, XviD, WMV DivX format digital contents

Not yet it doesn't, it supports some of those formats.

Replays music in MP3, WMA, OGG format on the multi-codec MP3 player.

Same again, not all of them supported yet.

USB 2.0 high speed
You can get a file of 500Mbps with USB 2.0 which is connected with PC

Doesn't always work (actually... rarely works unless you have a USB1 hub)

2AA Batteries
you can watch 320*240(30frame) of video file for approximately 8 hours and listen to mp3 file for approximately 14 hours (LCD off ) continuously with 2AA batteries.

45 minutes isn't 8hrs.

Please don't take this as bashing the GP2X, I think its great. I'm just trying to give every1 a reality check - that the GP2X in its current state has some problems. When you review a product, you can't review an early release, and then say "this device will be perfect in X months, with a billion games" because you can't guarantee it. Edge should have said that the device is constantly being improved, and all signs point to it eventually becoming a great media & game centre. But still, its not an excessively bad review. I've seen much worse said of other products that were better at the time of review (not in Edge, don't read Edge myself.. don't like it).

Nubie: I liked the arcade style sticks :) But this one is worryingly small and quite difficult to use for an extended period of time. My thumb hurts :\
