OK, i got around the usb2.0 thing, and the drive letter thing (only took me a few HOURS, total fucking bullshit I couldn't find it outlined clearly anywhere). Now that i have formatted my 1gb SD to fat32 with a "default" allocation unit, I can copy files to the unit. However using explorer (or anything else) the GP2X dosent ever recognise any files are there!

I have read about others having this problem, and i am just after a simple solution to it.

DONT tell me to buy a card reader - its a fucking retarded response, I shouldnt have to.

Do i just need to format the SD a certain way or something?

Is it actually impossable to achieve what I am after under M$ ?

Cheers.

I think your getting things confused. The GPH USB link is the retarded thing here, and the best thing you can do is buy a card reader. Yes, you shouldn't have to buy one, but GPH fucked up, and people such as GBAX bundle free card readers with the 2X because they know it's a nightmare to use without one.

So go logon to ebay, and buy a cheapo card reader for a couple of bucks/quid or whatever your currency is.

Damn it, i knew you were gonna say that...

EDIT: Hold on one second, I orderd from GBAX, now wheres my fucking free card reader?

EDIT2: Theoretically i only need to use the card reader to format the SD right?, so if i use a friends SD card interface i could then use my GP2X afterwards without using a card reader?, but at crappy USB1.1 standards. Is there any way to get this thing running on USB2.0?? it is a software fault right, are there otherdrivers i can use?

Give GBAX an email with your order number. I believe you have to send a SAE to them.

Being in Australia, how does that work? - will it fit in a regular size envelope?

Im having the SAME exact problem, and my GP2x also dindt come with a card reader, if you look on the website at gbax it shows what the GP2x is bundled with and a card reader isn't included in the list. I dont understand why I need a card reader when I can put the files on the GP2x and they successfully transfer over and show up on any PC I plug the GP2x in. Does anyone know how to fix this problem????

Well i managed to format my SD in a friends printer (it has a built-in card reader), you could try to do the same with a camera or something, but i tried it with a camera without luck. I emailed GBAX to see if they are giving away free SD read/writers so i'll post what they have to say when they reply.

fuck you "thecheat", go flame someone else. I think its a little more then "whining" when I buy a GP2X and cant use it for anything other then a paperweight. sure Gamepark Holdings isnt exactly AOL but you'd have to expect something functional for your money.

Mike F, if you orderd from GBAX then things are looking up, heres a copy of the reply they sent me:

"Hi Oscar,

Yes, if you send a Stamped self addressed envelope, including the instruction sheet you received from us, we will despatch a SD Reader/Writer to you by return. Or alternatively, as you are in Australia if you wish to pay the postage via Paypal, include your Protx order number and we will ship one to you.

Kind regards
Jacquelyn"

I got a GP2X in time for Christmas but still haven't a clue how to work it. I have just recieved (today - ordered seperately) an SD stamp-sized card which is 1 GB (as I read elsewhere that a higher GB might not work). I recieved a card reader with the GP2X so today I have tried to transfer files from my computer to the card reader. It hasn't worked as yet. It has a green led light which comes on when connected to a USB 2.0 port. Does the light go off once the files have been transfered? I have no clue as to how to transfer files from my computer to this card. Can anyone give me any help?

I had a similar problem (files are on the card but the GP2X doesn't see them) with mine WITH a card reader. I fixed it by formatting my SD card like a harddisk instead of a superfloppy so you might want to try that while the card reader is in the mail.

Ok, I've managed to get the files onto the card (using the card-reader in the USB 2.0 slot on the computer). I know this because when I take the card out and then reinsert it it seems to show what is on the card on the computer. The problem now is that the GP2X 1.0.1 (like you said Izomiac) won't pick up the sd card once it is inserted in the console itself. How do I format the sd card to be like a hard disk instead of a floppy? Is this done on the computer?

I must say that I am very disapointed with my purchase so far. Nothing but problems. I really think that Game Park Holdings should include a manual with the console. Also, if the USB cable is faulty then they should send us one that works.

I used a shareware program called FlashBoot (last option when you try to make the thing bootable), then used mkdosfs to format the card.

As I have posted elsewhere, I have a MultiMedia Card. Doesn't say on packaging that it is an SD. Is this why the GP2X won't read it?

Heres my general thought process;

You have to format it in a way the GP2X can read it, FAT32 is best because its reccomended for flashing (so probably supported well). However, i have no idea what a "multimedia card" is really supposed to be - if its the same size as an SD it probably is. I used a camera in a failed attempt to format my SD, to test reading capabilities you could try deleting the partitioning on the SD, chuck it in an SD compatable camera and take a few snaps, then chuck it in the 2X. This worked for me, i got the pictures i took showing up. That would test the theoreitcals anyway.

Hope thats of some guideance.

I read at the Wikipedia that MultiMedia cards came before SD cards but are still being used today. There are differing sizes but you can use the postage stamp sized ones (MultiMedia) in the same slots that SD's go in.

The MultiMedia card I have can be used in Digital Cameras; MP3 Players; Cellular Phones; PDA's and e-Books (so the packaging states).

I formatted the card to FAT32 (although this seemed unnecessary as it seemed to already be FAT32). Still the GP2X refused to acknowledge it atall.

I do not have a digital camera big enough to test the card. I have a tiny keyring digital camera that is kicking around somewhere (never been used).
