I've just wangled a nice laptop from the law firm I work at. OK it's not new but it's better than bugger all and they bought me a WiFi Router a couple of weeks ago too.

It's a 2.6 Celeron with 512 mb Ram and an ATI gfx card onboard. Great for a freebie but it runs hot and the battery life is crap. Running at 2.6 Gig it sounds like a bloody Hoover too with the fan running full wack all the time.

I've put NHC on it to underclock when I'm doing basic stuff like surfing, Word and watching AVIs etc but it still runs quite hot due to not being able to undervolt the CPU.

Does anyone know how to undervolt a Celeron®. It doesn't seem supported in RMclock etc. I think it's a chip limitation but though I'd put the question to you guys.

To cool it off, you could get one of those fan pads that set under your laptop. I had to get one for a laptop I have. It was normal for a KDS Valiant to run hot enough to burn your legs. I did not know this at the time that I purchased it. The pad uses a usb port. Just an idea if you do not find a way to undervolt it.

The speedswitchXP site seems to be for underclocking only no mention of undervolting. Forgive me if I'm wrong.

The fan pad is a sound idea but will reduce my battery life even more than it's current abysmal 1 hour 30 minutes at best.

I'll try updating the BIOS at some point over the weekend.

Updated the BIOS. A useful excercise that seems to have increased battery life a bit but still gives no options to undervolt.

Can't really tell if it's running cooler as it's so damn hot in Norwich today. Haven't seen a cloud for two days.

but when underclocking im sure your cpu must run a lot cooler, have you tried it?

Yep, Thats my thinking too, It must run cooler and Probably quieter too, As the fans shouldn`t need to come on as much.

To put it in perspective I am underclocking to about 900 odd Mhz most of the time and about 1.3 - 1.6 Ghz the rest of the time for basic gaming etc. Yes it is cooler but it still runs the fan all the time if a little quieter than before. As I said, it may well be a lot better when the weather cools down. Norwich was the hottest city in the UK yesterday at 31c

This may sound obvious, but have you made sure the airways are free of dust in the heat sink and vents. This is one of the biggest cause of overheating in laptops as the air cannot flow freely enough.

The laptop should have been designed to run okay as it is, as long as there are no obstructions like dust etc.

To be honest no it hadn't crossed my mind however the Laptop is generally clean and in near perfect nick so I doubt it's that . However I will give the thing a blast with an airduster when I get home from work to be on the safe side.
