Countdown to the Rival...? Interestingly, the XGP Mini has been joined by ANOTHER handheld: XGP Kids. Although it has a nice design, it has watered down specs. They're going to need some commercial titles, as the GPs generally haven't been very child-friendly.

One of the Downloads (currently no link) is 'Software Development Kit', so I wonder if homebrew is to be encouraged.

Jeez, how many versions do you need? Surely this is gonna be a pain for developers who have to design games, emulators for multiple machines with different specs?

Hopefully they will not encourage homebrew and the machine will die a slow death against the psp.

Before I got my GP2X I looked at the XGP. While I was more impressed by the style of it than the GP2X, the fact you're tied to commercial releases put me off.
If it doesn't take off and get developers (or licenses), it's worthless.

It does look very nice, though

XGP kids is just a remodelled GP32 isn't it?
nah, its different again. its got a lower (220x176) screen-res than the gp32 (320x420) and the XGP (480x272).

seems like an odd design decision - as it will have to have its own seperate range of software, and the screen-res makes software ports damn awkward.

maybe they're trying to compete directly with the gameboy-micro?

How do they expect getting in the 'handheld mainstream' market when they can't even write correctly in english? ("Not stand alone but Netwrok", netwrok sounds like korean food to me!)

They have way to many consoles. I would understand if they were like computers and they all had a few special things about them but were all compatible with each other.

There biggest competitor right now is themselfs.

What the heck kind of name is XGP Kids?

Now Gamepark has three version all with very different specs.

I don't know but it's somewhat awkard, isn't it? Even Nintendo various handhelds have a common compatibility (the GBA series).

Who is going to support all them?

XGP Kids - all right, first off, I have a 6 and a 9yo daughter, and they are allergic to anything that says "Kids" on it. My 3yo girl doesn't care - but I would never buy her a handheld.

Secondly, just two different kinds of systems doubles the developer work, lessens how much of the XGP Full's power is used (due to coding for the XGP and XGP Mini), or divides the number of games made. It also puts-off developers - because now you not only have to figure "Gee, few people own an XGP," but now you have to think "Uhh, well, folks who own an XGP probably have no reason to purchase an XGP Mini, and vice versa..."

The competing themselves to death comment by reallynotnick is spot-on. Wite_Noiz's addition was funny. Radek homed in on #2 more succinctly.

Edit: and != an

I think there is a less than 50% chance that we will ever be able to buy all three of these products. I can't see anybody putting up the money for manufacturing them all.

The most senseless is the XGP. The specs seem reasonably nice but it looks like a more expensive PSP to me. With no commercial game support. For those of you that are thinking of buying one, I'm curious about why... the only reason I can see is that if it is homebrew friendly it might get some slightly better emulators than the gp2x, and the potential exists for porting some 3D apps that the gp2x can't handle (though those ports will not be easy). It looks like a product in search of a market to me -- with a > 50% price increase over the gp2x I don't see how they can hope to take the "homebrew" market away from the gp2x. And with only a port of Quake I don't see how they can hope to take any sales away from Sony.

The XGP Mini is more reasonably priced and there are some people who will want it just for its fun tiny form factor (others hate it but lots of people like it). As a more powerful gp2x-type device that model might make some sense because it does at least have a different appeal.

XGP Kids is the worst name for a product I have ever seen (even Wii is better); who would buy something called 'kids'? Not even kids like that stuff. As a price-reduced compatible GP32 that model has some hope because of the large software base. If it isn't compatible it still has a chance because of the low price point, but it's not very inspiring. Basically the cheapest possible emulator machine o people can pirate old games and play them for a minimum of money.

Perhaps Koreans think differently about these things than us Westerners and they will have success there (assuming the products are ever produced).

Topic creator, you obviously don't go anywhere past the GP2X section of the forum. Get over it, GP2X isn't that great. If it was, I wouldn't be waiting for the XGP Kids right now. Pretty much all of the GP2X releases are emulators...BLAND. No originality, at all.

That is your opinion.

Personally the XGPs put me off. There's something about multiple handhelds with the same brand name that makes me think support will be spread too thin. Don't get me wrong, I like specs, but nobody I know is really interested in them. Lots of my friends ask me about the GP2X, but only one knows about the XGP.

I think they look plain and rather ordinary - sleek yes, but a little too dull for my tastes.

For gaming I have my DS, for homebrew gaming I have my GP2X. The XGPs don't really fit in anywhere for my needs.

JagMs - there looks to be people who want to talk about it though. Point me to a thread about the new Gamepark website highlighting the fact that it's got a potential download section for a software development kit. Up until now I thought it was agreed that the new XGPs were for commercial software only. Maybe not..?
