56k Warning! =the, "show Some Love To Sony Playstation 3&qu

I will end up buying a PS3 or a 360 but both companies seem to be trying as hard as possible to get me not to.

MS with their proprietary hard drives and wireless cards, and Sony with forcing BluRay onto consumers that don't want it.

It is pretty sad that both companies seem to show so much contempt for the gaming market. They are both more concerned with 'taking over your living rooms' than providing a games console with original games.

The PS3 will end up having some great games though (even if MGS4 doesn't have rumble) so I will get one eventually. But I am not paying more than £250 so it might be a long wait.

Oblivion is worth the price of the console.
I will not pay about 880$ to play a game that I could play on my PC which by the way was cheaper.

It's overpriced for what it does? Honestly, of all the possible arguments against the unit, you've chosen the absolute worst. It's a blu-ray player.....IT'S UNDERPRICED FOR WHAT IT DOES ;) That's why Sony is losing money on each console.

Now if you want to play the "over 600 euros for this whole device when I don't even want blu ray", that's another (and more solid) argument. I do agree that they should have made blu ray optional and charged something like 400 USD for a 20gb unit without the technology, and 600 for one with blu-ray. But hey, they did what they did.
Blu Ray is the UMD 2.0, I am sure of that. Paying extra for a feature that will be more or less useless soon.... won't be happening. Also, as already stated, no emotion engine.

There are enough arguments against it. I'm not saying I would not be interested in a PS3 under different circumstances. But as of now the price is too high for what it does, therefore the console is overpriced. Sony losing money does not change a thing; if the PS3 had a built in orange juicer, guitar tuner and filing cabinet those features would be just as useless eventhough they would surely raise the cost even more.

1. Just because you think Blu-Ray will fail doesn't mean it actually will. I would suggest you have a look at movie sales thus far. I read the article but cant find it now. It stated that at this point, Blu-Ray sales are beating out HD-DVD sales. Please note that this was BEFORE the European launch. Sony is satisfied with sales at this point enough to not worry about the future of the technology.

You may not care for it/want it, but others do. I know many people who buy BR movies on amazon.com all the time. Will it eventually fade out? I don't know. Is it the same (popularity-wise) as the UMD? Absolutely not.

2. The price is not too high for what it does. If you feel the price of BR technology (movies as well as the actual player) is ridiculous, that's another story and your opinion entirely. All I'm saying is that in comparison to prices as of now, the PS3 is actually underpriced. Your analogy is completely incorrect. If the PS3 had all those features, the unit would be even more expensive, not overpriced. If the PS3 morphed into a car, boat, and hovercraft, and also played games, and the price was something like $2,000 USD, it would be underpriced, but expensive. Just because it has a high price tag and technology you deem worthless, it is most certainly NOT overpriced.

Let's just stop arguing about semantics, it's going nowhere ;) Fact is Blu Ray is forced on PS3 gamers and it raises the price a lot - I think we can agree on that? I say it's overpriced, you say it's just expensive, nobody cares about two geeks arguing on the internet :D

As for Blu Ray vs HD-DVD: You started that one, not me. Blu Ray wins over HD-DVD? Maybe, I have no idea. The jump from VHS to DVD was huge. Gigantic. The jump from DVD to HD-DVD/Blu Ray? Kinda meh in comparison. What the penetration for both formats now? Seriously, I don't know. In fact I have not yet met a single person who has either a player or a single disc for any of the two. The format war will not be relevantly decided in near future, mark my words. If Blu Ray wins against HD-DVD, good, I don't care either way. The "winner" will be "vanilla" DVD for a long time to come. And when one format is ahead of the other and a reasonably large collection of movies is available the prices on the players will drop.

By the way I would have said the same thing if Microsoft had a HD-DVD-drive as standard in the XBOX 360. If Sony had sold the Blu Ray drive as an accessory and dropped the price for the base PS3 unit I would not have criticised it.

Thus concludes my off topic rant :D

Yeah, I kinda agree with that.

I don't think we will ever see a time when either of the current HD formats is mainstream in the same way DVD is now. People just don't give a shit; upscaled DVDs are fine. Plus, there is no way people are gonna go rebuying their whole collections as they did with DVD.

I personally think downloaded media is the way forward and HD-formats will go the same way as SACD etc. But we'll see.

Y'all should check out online retailers and instore next time you're there. Play.com and a few other sites have now knocked down the price of the PS3 to £399.99 and gamestation in the UK are now doing a 3 for 2 deal on all ps3 games and accessories. Is this a sign that no one is buying the stuff? Well after sales figures of the console falling almost flat after its first week in europe, i reckon so.

WHSmith has also dropped the price of the PS3 to £399.99.

I'm convinced that Blu-Ray will fail, for one reason and one reason alone. Forget the Blu-Ray drive for your PC costing £500, forget the massive costs for each individual film, forget the lack of availability. What Blu-Ray lacks is porn, because Sony are making the same mistake they did with Betamax :)

Also, the PS3 is in his bathroom because he doesn't have any other rooms - he sold them all to buy the PS3.

I agree that people wont o re-buying their collection. However, many people will take off from here and begin purchasing HD movies now that they're becoming available.

I'm just going to say this and you can believe it or argue against it, I don't mind: HD is sweeping the middle-class in the US by storm. Slowly, households are buying plasma/LCD TVs.

At some point, HD will become standard. When that happens, BR and HDDVD will become the new DVD- and yes, the price will drop.

I agree. I essentially said the same thing somewhere above. Sony should have made another model with BR and dropped the price of these (or something like that). But I do agree, making it standard wasn't too great. You do have to acknowledge that they ARE a business. And they ARE trying to make money. They saw an opportunity to try to introduce a new format that will bring in profits, and you really can't blame them.

I'd say we derailed poor Sony's thread pretty badly

No doubt. However, this process will be in the future - buying a Blu Ray player now is a waste, as I see it. So is buying an HD-DVD player. The prices will drop massively when it goes mainstream and the features will increase. Buying a Blu Ray player now is paying a lot for an "insecure" investment.

I have no moral problems with Blu Ray. I have with them constantly lying and kinda trying to eff us over, but that's another story ;)
They are trying to make money, sure, but I personally think the way was bad. If they had stuck to a regular DVD drive and dropped the price accordingly I would have probably bought a PS3 (well, depending on how far the price was dropped). I heard the same from many, many people.

As a Sony viral marketer customer he should be used to disappointing changes :D

For me, playing Oblivion on my PS3 is worth the price I paid for the system. It is the best video game I have ever played on a console, and since I never played it on a PC, plus the fact that I can (eventually) enjoy it on a nice HDTV from the comfort of my sofa, I'm a happy chappy.

There, hope that sated the semantic nazis around here :p

Well hurry up and buy one already! If you think oblivion will look great, try playing Fight Night in hi def B)

And that Gran Turismo HD concept looks fantastic in 1080p. Stop stalling and buy one!

Look, saying PS3 only has Bluray for movies is like saying PCs only have CD drives for music.

Name a cheaper form of storage for Sony for storing 50GB of data than Bluray.

Why do they need 50gb of storage?

Oblivion fits on one DVD ffs. The 360 doesn't seem to need more than DVD storage; neither do PC games.

Even if more space is needed, just spread the massive games over two disks.

Bluray was included as standard because Sony saw the PS3 as a way of promoting a new movie format. If you believe anything else, you are kidding yourself.

Yeah, but by that time pay-per-view streaming formats will be so huge there will be barely a need for either one.

Sorry to hijack this thread again, but a friend just sent me a link: http://www.petitiononline.com/capcompe/petition.html

I can't believe this is real. Gave me a really good laugh though - what are those guys angry about?

EDIT: :D I can't stop laughing. Some of these comments... seriously, is this an "insane asylum inmates only" petition? "200 DOLLARS MORE THAN XBOX IS NOT A BIG DIFFERENCE"; "Well I wouldnt mind this going to the 360 but since we didnt get or even announce Dead Rising or lost planet I have to say this is dumb! An Eye for an Eye a Tooth for a Tooth!"; "seriously wy are you risking making ur sell go DOWN when ps3 owners find out it isnt exclusive?"; "With over 110milion PS2 console out there, they for sure will buy a 360? and still buy products from a traitor publisher?"; "The PS3 is the better, so DMC 4 must be only on PS3 !"; "What makes a console attractive are the exclusive titles.... what do you want by multiplicating multi-platform games ? DMC 4 was and must be a PS3 exclusive title."... just click a random signature range, hilarity is sure to follow :D

You guys are RUINING this petition! This is a SERIOUS petition, and you all are RUINING it by making it your place to joke around. You can joke around on your stupid messageboards, why do you have to do it here? Your antics are making it so that this won't be taken seriously by Capcom. And, I support the boycotting of Capcom products until they make Devil May Cry 4 and Resident Evil 5 once again exclusive to Sony consoles!!

OH NOESSS!!!

I have been a loyal Capcom Gamer since my childhood days playing Snes, NES, Playstation and even to this day I remain loyal to capcom up until you chose to turn your back on sony for now I will turn my back on your products, I will froever turn my back on your products if this deal procedees. My friends own Xobox 360s and I myself am planing to buy one. I will still however not buy any of your products and tell my friends not to buy your products. In my experiance big companies like you never do what the customer wants for example, even though gamers wanted to "buy" a copy of Resident Evil 1.5 you never made it available not even in the Playstation Store. I am and very disapointed in your choice. Good day to you sirs.

I have no idea what is going on in this persons head.
