Can anyone detail this baby for me?

HOLY CRAP!!!

I have been hunting for some time for my next console... I loved my gp2x but I could never get over that silly 8 way stick... it kinda pissed me off... I even made several attempts to mod my gp2x... but couldn't get up the nerve... I ended up playing it for maybe a week and then boxed it.

NOW I have TWO options for my next console and after a lot of reading... BOTH will suit me perfectly!

The pandora: awesome for my "heavy gaming" runs... you know the meaning, when you just want to sit and game the hell out of something for a few hours.

The wiz: perfect little mobile console to carry with you and amuse you when you are trapped queueing or slumped in a waiting room...

You know? why choose?!? I will be getting BOTH!

Anybody know if the gp2x wiz will have support for suspend? Kinda like how you can suspend the psp in a game and then return to it without having to save.

Regards

André

Yeah, it has suspend... in your dreams!

I would compare it to the GP2X f100 sense it brings back telnet over usb IIRC.
The Pollux SoC supports Usb net and Tv out, but we don't know if Wiz will implement it. GPH was working in tv out and a breakout board like in GP2X. I hope we will have news about this.

Which reminds me, I wonder how fast will they hack the Nintendo DSi, it has a SD slot (most likely SDHC compatible). That will bring homebrew to the masses in it's own right.

check out the ace-2ki card. first slot 1 dsi flashcart.

I know that the dsi has 4 times the ram as a ds lite. Are there any noticeable differences in emulation between a dsi and a ds lite? Also will a card made for dsi work with an older ds lite?

Having been away from the opensource scene for a little while I feel I can look at it objectively. I have written a thesis on convergence, ubiquitous computing and consumer trends, and all these consoles are simply stepping stone to the next gen. Although we all love to play the old console games (as they are very playable, something lots of modern games lack) but we all want the asthetically pleasing modern games also. Portabilty is very important, though this depends on a ratio of usability/size.

Features are everything in term of potential... this is a fact, though utilizing them in a way which makes them accessable is paramount. The HCI of the console should be purely based on UCD and experience design approaches, which I can see the WIZ is not, the wiz is a product of industrial design. Contary to this I do love how the pandora has vitually every input method, though until I get my hands on one I couldnt say if it works.

In terms of a portable computer, the pandora has wedged itself between a gp2x and a netbook. But its size makes it pointless as a UMPC if you have a decent smartphone, or carry a netbook. Now, to draw your attention to a massive flop, the Gizmondo... actually i have worked quite alot with this, as its a great platform for augmented reality experience prototyping. This system had everything BT, sms, wap, camera, gps and and a nvidia Goforce gfx chip (except wifi... quit importantly). It went bust the company failed, it wasn't true opensource... and its basically died, terrible dpad, a pretty fuggly machine (though got to say I do like it). Its big failing was, it tried to be all things to everyone, without having the basics worked out.

I feel the specialist handheld console must converge. Although I hate apple with a passion, the iphone is a big step in the converge direction, and the d-pad cradle thingy that is being developed is an interesting vision.

I predict that in the next 5years all major consumer electrical manufacturers will have a console simliar to the pandora on the market, but converged with the smartphone...

On topic, I would say the pandora will be a better UMPC, but the WIZ a better HH games console!

Anyway this was quite a rant for my first post,

Hello everyone,

I'm Mike (saxton_boy)

Good day to you all :)

The Gizmondo...

Good old times, got 3 of them...
Was a very decent game handheld for that time... and Wifi missing was the only thing I didn't liked about it.
Also the design was pretty neat... I mean who thought someone really bring such a thing to the stores?!

The Wiz is a very good looking machine, with lot's of potential...
Only bringing out a wifi dongle...?
They should have intergrated it.

Ah well... For playing emu's I don't need internet ;)

I heard that Apple had rejected the Iphone control thing that OP are making. Are OP still going ahead with this?

D.

umm... correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't wiz have only 64 megs ram, and 1 gig of flash?

Oops, I was wrong nevermind, you were talking about different things.

Not really - in terms of most UMPC-type functions, yes, but both smartphones and netbooks lack decent gaming controls. It's more powerful, has a higher screen resolution, etc., than most smartphones, and a lot smaller and lighter than most netbooks, in addition to the considerably longer battery life. If anything, the Pandora owes more to the Dell Axim x50 series than anything else (yes, this is an odd thing to say, but I think it's justified): the x50(1)(v) was marketed as a multimedia device to some extent, as it used the Intel 2700G 3D graphics accelerator and 16 MB of VRAM, and Dell (and Intel) sold and encouraged a number of 3D games, even porting Cube to OpenGL ES as a tech demo.

I don't understand why people consider the iPhone as a gaming platform at all. Multimedia, in a sense: it plays music and video (some formats, at least). It does all the usual smartphone PIM stuff. However, smartphones have always been able to play music, and I don't know that there are really a substantial number of people that use their iPhone to watch movies, or even TV episodes (music videos, maybe?). I could be wrong about that, of course. Still, though, the accelerometer makes for some interesting puzzle games, maybe, but it doesn't have anything approaching proper controls and it fails as a general computing device due to its locked-down nature (even on a Windows Mobile smartphone, not really the most open of platforms, there are zillions of applications you can download and run directly).

Well...
I agree, and I disagree: because I do think that you're correct insofar as smartphones will contain more powerful CPUs and GPUs. However, I'm far from certain that they won't be locked down like the iPhone is, and the openness of the Pandora (and the Wiz, and the Dingoo) contributes greatly to what they are.

Yes, especially if you're concerned about price, if you only want to play games, the Wiz is not a bad choice at all.

I would correct the following list, however:

The Pandora has 256 MB of RAM, and 512 MB of internal flash, but the internal flash is really not intended for casual use. I don't think this is really a useful comparison, though, because it doesn't take into account the different goals of the two consoles. It doesn't consider price, for example, or more subjective things like size, weight, screen quality, and other things that might make a difference to someone who was really trying to decide what to buy.

In addition to the RAM correction, that list does not take into account the fact that the Pandora's CPU is several generations ahead of the Wiz. Even if the Pollox can be overclocked to 700MHz, it's still only 1/3 to 1/2 as fast as the OMAP3530. It also lacks a DSP and has significantly slower 3D hardware.

To be honest the wiz isn't good as pandora i don't recommend it at all, it similar to psp without keyboard.
Terms of specs is not good as pandora, not many people pre ordered the wiz, the pandora sold 2000 units in 6 hours, check the difference below:

Pandora processor 600mhz-900mhz/Wiz processor 533mhz
Pandora 128mb ram/Wiz 64mb ram
Pandora internal memory 256mb ram/wiz int memory 64mb ram
Pandora keyboard:yes/wiz keyboard:no
Pandora usb port: yes/wiz usb port:no

Pandora let you connect control pads, hard drives, pendrives without a cradle the gp2x doesn't have any usb port so you can't connect anything.
The following emulators will appear on pandora psx,n64,jaguar,dreamcast maybe bit slow,32x the pandora is the future not the wiz if you looking for good system go for pandora it can do more thing than wiz, i've already pre ordered my pandora console.
You are going to be one disappointed person, I just wish you wouldn't spread your ignorance as facts.

Not to mention the Pandora has been a month from shipping at least 3 times in the last year and a half.
This is also why I will be very happy to go back to gp32x.de. Some dickhead will always be in our forums trashing the system (not implying that this guy is a dickhead).

Utter nonsense. There were a lot of projected seasons that were missed but not projected only a month away. The first actual "month from shipping" that was released was November 2008, which was hardly a year and a half ago.

It was supposed to ship last April, May, June then July then November than December then early Jan... I think it might have been shipping in late 07 early 08 as well.
The pandora will eventually ship, but it has been (ok 2 or 3 months) from shipping for well over a year, if not close to a year and a half.
