It would be nice (and useful) to have a dictionary for the GP2X. I'm aware that on Qtopia you can do that, but it doesn't run right off the GP2X like a normal app.

Some translators were made for the TI 92 Calc. so I'm assuming it shouldn't be too hard for the GP2X either.

I can help with compiling verb conjugates. I already have a list of possible words to conjugate for German, and I can also look up the English translation of each.

However, even though I can compile such a word list, I can't make it into a functional app. I'm willing to compile that word list, and send it to someone who is capable of making at least a German Verb conjugate program or any other language actually.

As for a dictionary, easiest way would be to port one, however I'm not too familiar with open source dictionaries. ;)

To fulfill your need for a standalone dictionary program, I don't see why a port of http://edictionary.sourceforge.net/ with an SDL frontend would be too difficult.

NOTE: Please note that edict uses various dictionary web-sites to fetch the
meanings of the words. Please read the "TERMS OF USE" of the dictionary
site before you start using it. Don't use the program if you intend to violate
the "TERMS OF USE". The author of this program will not be held responsible for
any violations/consequences in any way. The program is provided just to
facilitate fetching text using HTTP.

Hmmm..this means you need INTERNET ACCESS for it to work. I think DamnSmallLinux has that program. It would be pretty much useless for the gp2x then, unless the gp2x had wifi and you were able to pick up a signal when you needed to use the dict.

didn't the GP32 have an edict dictionary (for japanese/english)? i remember it using an old version of the edict files because the GP32 couldn't handle the newer files (couldn't fit into ram or something)

if someone wanted to make a frontend to the unix wordnet source, which is just an english dictionary. the sources and libraries are available at http://wordnet.princeton.edu/

Oh, easy! Good backend for testing diffrent text input idea on.

And seems to compile without a hitch. (BRB ;-))

Sweet, so does this mean you'll be able to port it to the GP2X?

Actualy, that's a screenshot of the Win32 compile, the GP2x compile also works (tested it) It's just that I don't have a digital camera so I cannot take a 'screenshot' of it running on the GP2x. It did run pretty slow on the GP2x, but I 'requested' the text every draw cycle :p. Total size is only like 10MB :) Not sure how compleet the dictionary is.

Need to work on a better frontend, as this was only a quick and dirty compile.

That's great to hear :)

Also if you want, I can take a pic of the GP2X version with my camera, just send me the compiled version via PM use http://www.yousendit.com and put your own e-mail address, and just give me the link to download.

http://daid.mine.nu/pub/WordNetGippex.rar

Test version.

Features:
-WordNet word search (equivalent to: "wn 'XXX' -over")
-Start or Selects quits
-Runs at 75mhz
-[A] makes the cursor move faster
-[X][Y] Select a key on the onscreen keyboard
-Customizable onscreen keyboard

To customize the keyboard, edit the keyboard.bmp file, top half is the displayed picture, bottom half 'shows' what the keys do. The color of the bottom half pixel defines what that pixel is. (yes, freeform buttons)

So the current picture looks like this:
key1.png

(Yes, those are diffent shades of green/red/blue)

But you could also use this one:
key2.png

If you want it more compact. Or fire up paint and draw your own.

Thanks for the port Daid!

I tried it, and it worked great, except that the text on the line gets cut off, but that's not a major issue. (Seems to be a problem with the standard e-book reader as well).

I have some questions though:

How do I scroll down?
And does it run a 75MHZ right away or you have to downclock it manually via Gmenu2x or w/e app you use.

Here's a screenshot of the GP2X version you ported, it aint the best quality though ;) I think it got the job done though.

Yeah, I'll need to implent proper word-wrap.

Scrolling down isn't possible yet :X that will come with the proper word-wrap.

And it puts the CPU to 75Mhz on startup, so no need to use Gmenu2x to do it.

Ah I see. Thanks for the response. I can't really help with the programming, but if you'd like, I could help with any graphic work or documentation. (Such as making a read me for it.)
