.doc's used to be a raw text format, anyway. Files gotten from BBS's back in the early-mid 90s are pretty cumbersome to use now, because of the .doc format and .nfo files being something for the registry or somethingorother...and I think file_id.diz opens as something else, too. Next thing they'll do is probably define some archive filename as a windows filetype, like .LHA (amiga .LZH) or ARJ. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
One more realistic possibility...someone could code a file viewer that uses its own format. Word files have stupid things like margin settings and such, it'd be useless to port it, and that's if there isn't some kind of copyright on the file structure. Someone could code something, with fixed width and a few basic commands...say bold, underline, italic, and 16-64 colors to avoid palette confusion...along with left, right and justified alignment. Then they just can make some kind of PC program to interpret it, and there you go! Of course, it'd be far easier just to use raw text.
So...anyone know of a fixed width text viewer?
