I always wanted to try out MMORPG's but I didnt want to pay a monthly service I heard they are a few free ones but are any worth checking out?

Thanx Ive just tried runeScape seems ok are there any other free alternatives with more beefyer graphics and more customable options for Characters?

I keep messing around with my own RPGs actually. Either a multiplayer Nethack-clone set in the Pulp Fiction universe, or a ninja-based PHP RPG with user-editable worlds. But I'll get back to you in a few years about those.

Try PlaneShift, it's free and near useless at the moment but constantly improving. Definately worth keeping track of. Avoid MAngband :) And don't get too attached to some of the better games - I was playing Astonia for a loooooong time before they suddenly decided to go commercial :( Running a MMORPG is fairly expensive.

Haven't played any MUDs lately...they've gotten too big and confusing. I remember one that let you pick up a blade of grass and use it as a weapon :/ Most have about 4 hours of training before you even get to the town :(

Runescape

That's scrapeing the bottom of the barrel right there, There's really no good free MMORPG, it's impossible to give away something that's quality for nothing, BUT... I can name a few good cheap ones.

Endless Ages, Knight online, etc...

You can also play ragnarok online free on a good private server.

what are you talking about no good online rpg's I have to say ultima online.

and conquer online

can do so much more in ultima online.

The first mmorpg and the best
