Gp2x Or Psp Help Me Decide Please

Porn issue aside folks, LOL, any other things to add???? My buddy gets paid this week, so I'm going to have to decide in a few days. Thanks, H.G.

I have both the PSP and a GP2X. I know many people can't afford or simply don't want to buy both. That being said, both systems are nice and have a lot of future potential. However, the difference between the two lies in where their potential will go.

The PSP will, at some point, undoubtebly have sold commercial games made for it. The quality of commercial games on the PSP won't be matched by the GP2X. Likewise, the movie player should remain better than the GP2X (man, is that a nice screen for movies on the PSP) and, of course, the PSP will have internet access which the GP2X (at least in this iteration) won't.

That being said, I see some ultimate limitations to what will be available in the homebrew arena ... particularly if you want to buy new games as they come out and need to update to play them. Sure, homebrew cracks will plod behind, but who wants to wait months (or longer) to play that hot game they REALLY want? And, while the PSP screen is wonderful for movies and the commercial games, it sure has some limitations for emulation quality.

The GP2X will never have the commercial games or the same movie quality as the PSP. But, its potential on the emulation and homebrew front is infinitely better. The system is made for homebrew ... and that is the key feature. I have little doubt that the GP2X will end up being the better machine for this purpose. Not to mention, with continued upgrades, the movie, music and e-book reader (while maybe not top tier) will be pretty good.

If you want to buy a system to utilize ALL of its features (and can only pick one), I think the real question is whether you want better commercial/current games and high quality movies/internet or if you want a top end homebrew and emulation machine (with serviceable movies, e-book, etc). Answer that question and your answer as to what you want to buy is made.

I use my PSP a little more right now. But my GP2X use increases daily as the development advances (and it is advancing rapidly). I can see a lot more of my time going to GP2X for emulation and homebrew purposes as the development matures. I just hope firmware fixes can shore up a lot of the shortcomings that people believe firmware can fix.

I like both. I have both. I guess I am a fanboi of both.

Well personally I am not getting a psp because they are letting a company produce porn videos (UMD) for the psp...
I think there's more DivX/XviD porn than UMD porn.

I won't pass judgment on those that feel the need to spank their monkey to pr0n ... but assuming you feel compelled to do so, why the hell (with the internet, DVD, VHS, whatever) would you feel that abusing the stiffy with your handheld was a good idea?

Thanks for your input, you made some very good points (actually everyone who has posted in this thread has made good points for both consoles, thanks a lot for that gang), but as someone who has both consoles right now, I'd like to ask you the following "crucial" (well at least crucial for me, LOL) question.... If by any chance you have the NEO CD EMU on both consoles (it's what I'll really be spending my time playing) can you tell me which one looks, plays better???? Thanks, H.G.

buy the damn 2X... the dev scene is awesome, the support and community will continue to grow, and porn rules - the end

LOL, once again, porn aside, can anyone tell me which one emulates better the Neo CD??????? Thanks, H.G.
All this talk about porn is just us trying to avoid the fact that the PSP emulates Neo CD better at the moment.

Thanks Nick, I'll take that as a big "Thumbs Up" for the PSP, and since that's the emu that I'm PLANNING to use the most, LOL, it's a big factor for me. H.G. B)

Well yeah if you can get past the ugly screen stretching then the PSP is the way to go.

I have played the NeoCD emulator on the GP2X and I think it will take a very long time before it even comes close to the one on the Psp.

NeoCD 0.7.1 on the Psp is very complete and the screen scaling issues have never bothered me. You have options to select between full screen, zoom1, zoom2 and 1:1. The author said he plans to add save states and many other features in newer versions.

If this is the main emulator you will be playing then you need to decide whether you want near perfect NeoCD emulation on the Psp guaranteed right now or the potential of good NeoCD emulation on the GP2X in the future, although not guaranteed.

I think one of the main performance factors is the Psp GPU, the speed difference is very noticeable when I play using software rendering when compared to hardware acceleration. I guess there is a 60fps limit option in the menu for a reason huh. If you do get a Psp, dont forget to try out the Playstation one emulator alpha demo, much more exciting than the NeoCD in my opinion.

re: NeoCD, keep in mind that the current version of the GP2X NeoCD emulator was released about a week after the console itself was released. The PSP's emu has had a year to get to this state.

Well...
There is a 2D accelerator in the GP2X, and all NeoGeo games are 2D as far as I know.
As soon as the 2nd processor gets usable I don't see any more obstacles in front of a perfect emulation... Even big roms got supported recently... and don't forget how fast the emulator makes progress.
There is a PSX emulator which runs most 2D games quite fast already...

No wonder the PSP NeoGeo Emulator is far more advanced... the PSP is out since a whole year? I wouldn't be so concered about the PSP screen stretching, rather about the blurring and the lack of a cheap non-hack TV-out ;).

Wow, that's a lot of procrastination and dithering over what should be fairly straight forward.

I imported a PSP when they first came out, shite. Pure and utter crap - I hated it so much I sold it immediately. Then again, I've been stung with so-called 'quality' Sony products so many times I now just boycott the whole brand.

Buying the PSP on the strength of ONE emu which may not work in the future is a tad extreme, only go for it if you want to pay through the nose over and over and over ad nauseum on commercial games, oh, let's not forget re-purchasing your favorite movies on UMD. As with all Sony products, it's over rated, proprietary, locked down and probably not a good investment in the longer term if you want an emu platform.

The GP2X is a Linux box, lots of emulators exist and will be ported and everything I'm reading is telling me "BUY ONE". If a specific emu doesn't exist yet, then be patient, port it yourself, or try looking for games on an alternative emu'd platform.

Me, I'm going for a GP2X, saving up right now for one asap. I'm not a manic gamer, I get ill at the thought of spending £20-40 for a game and the only games I like exist already and can be emu'd quite nicely. Plus I'm hoping for some more productivity apps etc. after all, it's a Linux box and hopefully more functional use will become possible in future.

Sonic, Metal-Slug and Pac-man rule! (Now, if I CAN'T play those games I'll reconsider)

anyone who looks at pron is a wanker

hahahahhhahaha

yeah get a psp play it for a while once you get bored sell it and get a gp2x by that time everything will be running faster

and maybe those damn scanlines will be sorted out by then too

Slightly related, theyve just got all the major bugs out of the GTA exploit, not sure if it gives them full kernel acsess but it does mean homebrew on PSP is going to last a nice bit longer.

They somehow managed to completely unload GTA from memory giving them full user-mode control over all the available memory and resources apart from flash via this Psp GTA exploit. This potentially means homebrew will be availiable on 2.01, 2.50, and 2.60 firmwares.

However, if you are mostly interested in the NeoCD emulator then this is not such an issue, if you decided to purchase a Psp, I would suggest getting one with any firmware up to maximum 2.0 since you may well wish to play commercial games in the future.

On a further note, I have just noticed a new release of the Psp NeoCD emulator to version 0.72 with one of the fixes implemented being one I personally suggested a few days ago. One of the other fixes is not something I have seen before in an emulator and is regarding copy protection.

Thanks Mr Doctor, that's promising news, however, I think that your advice a few pages back about fliping a coin is what it's all going to come down to, LOL. I've only got a few days left gang, hope I make the right choice, thanks a lot for all the info, and until I lay the money down, still open to ideas, H.G.
