hi everyone,

im about to pay for my pandora (premium) this sunday. i use to have a pre-order last year but canceled.

i know that the pandora shuould be able to run a usb to vga, but the real question is can it run usb-to-hdmi.

if so can it run the full 1080p/i.

USB to VGA does work! I can't remember who did it or what make the guy used, it was over at gp32x.de and was in the first couple of months of production.. may/june time IIRC

I have no idea if those other converters would work, without the DSP working we will unlikely get 720p running smooth but I am pretty sure that will be possible someday. Maybe soon who knows. Although if the adapter does work I would imagine XFCE would work in 1080p resolution but there would be no benefit as video files wouldn't be able to decode fast enough to display in 1080p. another thought USB 2.0 has a theoretical limit of 480Mpbs and I doubt that is enough to carry all the data required for 1080P without some crazy compression or downscaling.

Just for the record playing DVD rips on the Pandora is beautiful already on the small screen, there isn't a day goes bye I don't use my Pandora, PSX primarily, but also watching shows like Paun Stars/American Pickers while travelling, Internet even the odd bit of porn but I'm sure you don't meed to know any more on that matter LOL.

Flash support is better than reported in my opinion, 240 res youtube is great going any higher and it starts to slow, again will improve with DSP support.

Even on a full desktop computer, devices that do (USB to VGA, USB to HDMI ) don't work well with anything that moves fast, like video and games.. the USB 2.0 port doesn't have enough bandwidth to handle full motion well.. these devices are meant for an extra display for regular web browsing / general office work that you just need to have something up on another display. It's not a limitation of the pandora, but these devices in general.

It may improve with DSP support, but only if the version of Flash you're using tries to decode the video via the DSP, through e.g. OpenMAX libraries.

thanks for all the feedback everyone. i may buy a usb-to-vga to test it out. even if it dont work its hand to have one for a pc in the house.

the main reason i wanted to know about the usb-vga and usb-hdmi is i was thining of making a laptop a docking-station.

The laptop will have no motherboard in but u slot the pandora into the laptop and the pandora becomes a larger laptop with additional drives (ssd or flash).

there probally no point in doing this but i personally think it wud be a cool thing to do.

I dont want any replys saying its stupid and pointless because it wud defeat the purpose of the pandora being small and mighty!

The most recent Flash10 beta has support for h264 decoding via DSP, it just needs access to it.

You know, I used to wonder about an imaginary device that worked in this way when I was younger. I'm really interested in seeing how you progress with this idea, myself. :p

Awesome, how'd you hear about the Pandora?

It's a lot more complicated to get working than that, unfortunately. There's a description here, but it might also be helpful to just run strace on flash and see what libraries it tries to dlopen when you play an h.264 video.
