Hello,
I'm following discussions about pandora for a while, I like a lot the hardware concept, but I'm little bit worried from discusions about develeping sw/os for pandora from scratch, or using distribution which comes from desktop computers. I think there is a plenty of projects which made a lot for linux on small linux computer - it's not only ubuntu here.
As I understand the basic system should not be big - there is not enought space for it so It will be based on current solution for previous game handhelds - I like this idea and expect that this basic distribution will cover not only gamers needs (emulators), but also basic media/internet/connectivity thinks.

Thats all OK, but what I'm missing up to now is some definition what will be the main direction for the basic distribution (to offer also PIM/small office/synchronization/same look and feel for most applications). Lot of users knew ubuntu/firefox from theirs PC, but I'm not so sure if we need desktop on this small device. It's to big, but nice that it could work. So I spend some time to get a list of distributions/enviroments which could pandora benefit from (and become part of) - just to open eyes that pc based distribution should not be what we need/want, that there are faster ways to get full working mobile pc.

environment projects
matchbox http://matchbox-project.org/ environment used in maemo and poky
opie http://opie.handhelds.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/ qt extended based
gpe http://gpe.handhelds.org/ environment based on gnome libs

distributions:
angstrom http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/ distribution focused on ARM devices, based on OpenEmbedded noticed several times by developrs to be posible solution. supports opie and gpe
poky linux http://pokylinux.org/ based on OpenEmbedded, uses their own project matchbox environment and Pimlico PIM applications to get full solution for AMR/x86 handhels
Debian armel port http://www.debian.org/ports/arm/ ongoing port of debian to ARM
maemo Nokia covered, for their internet tablets, using matchbox
mamona http://dev.openbossa.org/trac/mamona/ alternative for maemo on n8x0, full free, using Enlightenment environment
ubuntu-mid, ubuntu-mobile - for x86 intel based netbooks, mid for similar screens like Pandora has, mobile for about 9"
android http://code.google.com/android/ from google for phones
openmoko http://www.openmoko.org distributions for phones

other projects
mojo http://mojo.handhelds.org/ recompilig of x86 based distributions (debian, ubuntu) to for ARM based devices, but up to now without any hw specific packages - you have to tune it on your own
OpenEmbedded http://www.openembedded.net/ build enviroment

Feel free to add other interesting projects (ie. comparison of possible web browsers with support across distributions and memory requirements), and try to find way for most...
