We've had a currently listening to thread for ages, so I thought it was time for a movies thread.

What have you seen recently?
Any movies you looking forward to?
Comments on movies other people have seen recently?
Found anyone hotter than the Depp in a movie? :p

Last night I saw The Butterfly Effect for the first time. At first I thought it was pretty unusual, but then things started to come together and it got pretty cool. The ending was pretty sad :(

I really enjoyed the movie and think I might have to get it on DVD at some point

Mr. Brooks,
I thought it was quite excellent, great acting from both costner and hurt. Highly recommended. Something I'd buy on dvd :)

I've heard that, and it's pretty unexpected considering how shitty Costner's movies usually are (except for 3000 Miles to Graceland).

I watched 28 Days Later recently, which I shockingly hadn't seen before. Also, not a movie, but as I mentioned in the Discussion Cube, I watched the TV series Dexter from start to finish and it was really good.

I watched The Butterfly Effect a year or so ago too, and I thought it was fantastic. I love movies that share ideas with the viewer, rather than explosions and special effects :)

Here's some from me, try Papillon and The Midnight Express. Both are great movies I got to (re)see recently on AMC :)

shame the interpretation of chaos theory was flawed ;) Still a good movie, I own the directors cut.

The movie The Butterfly Effect is loosely based on actual chaos theory. Loosely, in the same sense that Texas Chainsaw Massacre is "loosely" based on actual events ;). The premise of the movie was that one thing leads to another, that's all.

But you had to throw that comment in to let others know that you're in the "know" when it comes to chaos theory, eh?

My wife and I just watched "The Departed"... wow. Seriously, just wow. I'm not a huge fan of Scorsese in general but this was an excellent movie, very reminiscent of "Donny Brasco". I recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a problem with the "F" word.

Also recently seen and enjoyed:

"Blood Diamond" - A great, tense film with a message that sort of sneaks up and grabs you. Makes you think and care about the characters a great deal.

"Land of the Blind" - Quirky, strange and I'm unsure of the ending. In a similar vein as "Brazil" in my opinion... I'm not sure if I'd watch it again but it was entertaining.

"The Last King of Scotland" - Another excellent film. Fictional but based on true events and people, I was glued to it the whole time. I don't think there was one minute where I thought "Well, this is a good time for a bathroom break". A bit gory but, overall, really good.

"Children of Men" - A great Distopia themed movie (a genre of which I'm a big fan). The story was believable in an unbelievable way, much like "28 Days Later". It COULD happen but it's very unlikely. Had a sort of "Postman" vibe to it with bits of "Escape from New York" thrown in, IMO. I'm not really doing it justice, just see it.

@DCGM: Your post was pointless and just cited common sense. Anyone who'd seen the movie would know its based loosely on the theory of chaos theory. Because chaos theory is utter bollocks. Why do you need a theory for a situation for when something seems random but isnt? It's really quite pointless IMO.

Recently, I watched Lost In Translation and I thought it was wonderful, I really did. Bill Murray and Scarlet Johanson were great in it and the underlying story and the deep psycho-trauma at being unable to adapt to your surroundings were the things that brought me into it. Wonder what Murray whispered to Johanson before he left.

Yes, it plain outright copied th efirst one. Except, stupidly, after branching off into a different probabable universe the main character doesn't have the memories "rush" back to him. Making him completely fucking clueless. Furthermore, it was far to short and has no plot at all, it's like a rushed version of the first one half the length, it tries to add a twist in at the end, but in doing so causes continuity errors that are HUGE. Finally, the plot is just "you can't change things for the better" just like the first one, but with a bland story.

At the festival, in the campsite in the evening, there were so many 300 quotes, it was brilliant. You'd be just falling asleep in your tent, and from one side of the site, you'd hear a cry go up of "Our arrows will blot out the sun!" then a slight pause, followed by another shout from the opposite side: "So we will fight in the shaaade!"

300 is just a fantastic movie, full of quotables.
