Note that the renderer is Vulkan only (with a Metal renderer on the make also). That will be an issue for many ARM based machine for now...

Right, that was mentioned. And there are no plans to add opengl support (even though a pull request for it would probably get merged) , the developer recommends to just run the proprietary original on older hardware. Maybe that would run with wine and box86...

Yes, original Gothic 2 seems to works with wine+box86

(but I haven't tried wine+box86+gl4es)

When should one add gl4es to the mix when trying stuff out? On the surface level I understand the concept of what it does, but not really how to tell when it would be needed/useful.

It's only usefull when you don't have an OpenGL driver for your hardware. Like on Pandora & Pyra, or on Android (or when using Emscripten/WebGL).
