Pandora And Gph?

I just thought it was worth pointing out that the previous phenomenon of the shoulders not "matching" on individual units may have been eliminated, is all.
Ah, so I guess at least they're both as bad as each other now.

It's possible that the unpainted shoulders are universally better than the painted/redrilled ones, even in the best case scenario. Again, using my imagination, I would still expect them to not be world's best shoulders or anything but adequate. Do you know if yours are unpainted?
I would assume that unpainted is indeed universally better simply due to the parts fitting as intended, without the inconsistencies introduced by taking a Black and Decker to them. The drilling did apparently improve, but my first shoulder buttons really were atrocious; the holes were too large, off-centre and misaligned axially. I'm curious to see how things have improved when my replacement arrives this week. The switch is always going the limiting factor though, so I'm not expecting greatness.

Bad is subjective, I guess - I don't mind them, as I've come across worse. :p They don't have quite as much "play" in them as, say, even the ones on the Game Boy micro (which are otherwise somewhat similar to the ones on my new Pandora in how they respond, I think), and of course they don't click because of the switches, but *personally* I don't find them horrendous (and I use them frequently - I don't think I would if they were what I'd consider poor).

Your mileage may vary, of course. :)

I think the team is what the pandora has over anything else. I like the directness, this handheld is truly community driven. And maybe strange to say but thats where it's at today, *vomit* the facebook generation *vomit*.

Its the thing my msx missed when I had it, others that also had it and people who could teach me to use it in better ways.

How different it would have been if I would have had access to BBS etc, in the 80s :eek:

I was too young (or maybe dead) to experience it but I understand in the early days BBS forums were very popular with those machines via 128bps modems. I remember reading at one point there were thousands of members of some of the 'commercial' forums, at least in the UK. but it all died out in the late 80's/ early 90's.

*Trying to remember where the feature on it was* (will edit if I find it, would be great if it they were archived somewhere).

I also never used a bbs but I read about the term somewhere then, I was still using my msx when friends had a amiga or a PC. I did manage to do quite some stuff on it, mostly by reading magazines. (my parents would have never allowed me to hook up the phone to the computer, imagine the phone bills :D )

However I feel that the pandora goes back to this concept it can do anything you want especially if you set your mind to it, the difference is that there is this community that can help. And its one community not like a windows or linux community that are all over the place, here its nice and concentrated.

Yeah maybe this forum is like the old forums from the Spectrum/BBC etc. scenes. I got the impression it might be from reading up on them.

Somehow it has been quite a while since I had ideas about making a game or software in general, the pandora has my head spinning with ideas (that'll probably never come to be but having the idea alone is already great :D )

Come to think of it, the Gizmondo's shoulder buttons always looked pretty silly to me too. Are they actually any good?

They're not bad.

My personal shoulder button ratings:

Snes = 9 out of 10
GBA original = 8 out of 10
GBA Micro = 5 out of 10
Pandora = 2 out of 10
GP2X = 7 out of 10
Gizmondo = 6 out of 10

i was a bbs sysop in 93/94, i guess, PowerNet BBS
33.6 kbps modems, damn, a whole night to download a game, that was the happiest suffering we could possibly have at that time, insane phone bills

I'm trying to remember some of the names of the classic ones.

It was always funny how almost every BBS had a secret Warez/Porn area if you just spoke to the right people to give you access. I think those ones out lasted the 'open' warez sites because BT and their cronies could not be arsed to dig deep when shutting them down.

When I was busted I had a long chat in the police station with the guy from BT whos job it was to hunt down and close down warez BBSs. He was telling me (after I'd been interviewed, the bastard) that if you just say nothing there is little BT can do to prove 'who was pressing the keys' if there is more than one person in the house. They had busted one guy in Durham 7 times and never been able to charge him for running a pirate BBS as he had 7 kids.

Good times. I wish I'd been around in the 80's scenes. Must have been amazing, a real gold rush of sorts.

Weird.

Apparently when the first hackers were caught, there were no laws related to misuse of computers. As such, they were charged with... 'stealing electricity' from the computer they hacked into :D

That's what they charged me with.

Mental. When was this? Did they give you a big fine and community service?

You got caught!!!!

I remember connecting to BBS's with my C64 modem and copying straight to floppy disk.
Provided it was late enough, I could generally stay connected long enough to grab a new game by the following evening.
