Pandora freezes while accessing sdcard or usb flash drive.

Hi all,

I'm a lucky and very happy customer who about a week ago received his pandora (ordered in 2008) - it's a rebirth pandora :)

There's just one issue I can't find a workaround for - the pandora gets unresponsive (seems to freeze, no input is registered, mouse pointer can't be moved anymore etc) when large amounts of data is transferred.

I can always reproduce this by trying to start chromium.pnd from one of my two sdcards (transcend 16gb, sandisk 8gb both class 10) or an usb flash drive.

It doesn't matter if the pandora boots from NAND or from sdcard and it also happens with the experimental (3.2) kernel.

It doesn't matter if wifi is on (and connected) or off.

If I was connected via wifi to my local network when the pandora got unresponsive - I have about one minute to login to the pandora via ssh and issue an "sudo shutdown -h now" command. After that minue I can't connect via ssh anymore.

So something does still work (for short while) although the pandora seems to hang.

Lid settings are configured that the pandora should shutdown when the lid is closed - but once the pandora is unresponsive the closing of the lid is ignored...

Installing stuff to nand and running it is not a problem - only via sdcard and usb flash drive.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. (I did search this forum (and the german one) and also read the inofficial manual and the faq).

Thanks,

madmuid

Hmm, never heard of such an issue before.

Could you try running top and see if the unit still works (although running slowly) and what task could cause the freeze?

Can you ping the unit from a different computer and see whether it really freezes or just slows down?

When logging in the unit with ssh, does dmesg say something weird within that minute?

You might want to try to reflash the SuperZaxxon-Beta firnware, maybe some software issue..?

Hmm that does seem a little odd, try a reflash.

Maybe this has something to do with the SD card corruption fix that notaz put in the 3.2 kernel?

FWIW, I've never really been able to use Chromium; others, fine, but not that. Somethign is really screwy with just that app, that causes all sorts of mayhem :)

Do not use transcend cards with OP :

http://pandorawiki.o...patibility_list
Actually I use transcend 32GB SDHC cards.

Since "those bugs were "fixed" in the kernel I haven't seen issues with any sd-cards, except for not being able to physically insert or remove them.

I even used the pandora with the cards as a USB stick to upgrade my sat-receiver :).

(The pandora can be used as a very fast USB stick)

Hmmm, i hate the scoring system of that compatability list. There is none. Something like wine-app-db would be nice.

Anyway: I do not rely on that list. The transcend report is a year old, and things have changed since.

But the problem with that list is that you cannot determine how correct the report was and when it was reported.

So transcends are doing fine for me.

Hi again,

thank you all for your kind advice!

>Can you ping the unit from a different computer and see whether it really freezes or just slows down?

For some reason my ssh connection does'nt drop after ca. a minute anymore.

Ping works - but that info is redundant as ssh currently doesn't lose the connection...

>Could you try running top and see if the unit still works (although running slowly) and what task could cause the freeze?

Here is a snapshot of top while pandoras gui is frozen - X takes a lot of cpu time - if I kill X the ssh connection is dropped.

This is chrome - the gui froze when chrome wasn't finished with loading - even the mouse pointer still has the little wait icon:

pandachrome2x.png

>You might want to try to reflash the SuperZaxxon-Beta firnware, maybe some software issue..?

I will do that too - but later. I actuallly want to boot from sdcard. And I was doing so with the 8gb sandisk previously. An hour ago I used SD Installer 1.5 to prepare my transcend 16gb and booted from it. But the gui still freezes no matter if I boot from nand, or any sdcard (I also tried older 2gb and 1gb sdcards) - as long as I start .pnd programs from sdcard or usb. It doesn't have to be chrome either - I can play e. g. rick dangerous or lemmings for a while and after a few minutes the gui will freeze - it just takes longer to do so.

Starting .pnd from nand works.

>Do not use transcend cards with OP :

I will buy a more compatible sdcard soon and test again...

>When logging in the unit with ssh, does dmesg say something weird within that minute?

Here is the output of dmesg while the gui is frozen (chrome.pnd was started from a usb flash drive)

Thanks for your help!

I think I remember something about Chromium causing X to deadlock, so I guess it's what's happening there. There are some versions of Chromium out there that don't cause this. Should hopefully be fixed when the whole OS is finally updated to newer Angstrom..

oh no - I just installed chrome to nand and the gui also froze while it was loading. Thanks notaz - you are right of course - I think I was to focused on chromium, I will do more tests and report back - sorry for the confusion.

>why are you installing anything like that to nand?

My intention was to make sure that my issues only had to do with sdcards or usb flash drives. I obviously don't want to use nand too much that's why I'm installing the os to sdcard in the first place.

If you are concerned about wear, NAND is using ubifs, with it's wandering tree it never writes to the same block many times and should be safe for OS use. Over pandora's existence there have been no reports of NAND wearing down.

except you can always add more religions to your mind, and can always replace your religion, but like your mind, you can't replace your nand so easily, and adding 50mb to nand is only asking for trouble, even if it only means filling up nand

I also have this issue when I start up chromium from my Sandisk 16GB Extreme card. I will test other apps tonight.

Chromium is actually some strange build for Chromium OS. It's not even possibly to quit it easily and throws (fake) low battery warnings from time to time. It's not that usable at the moment. So you might want look for a different browser instead of spending a lot of time to get this one to work.

Chromium is the free software version of Chrome, I have been using it fairly regularly here on my Debian machine - it is a normal browser here at least.

Cheers notaz - will flash :)

OmegaPhil, yes, I use it on my notebook as well, from time to time. I should have written THIS build of Chromium for the Pandora. Have you tried it?
