I am playing TR 2 on my Pandora at the moment and I am running into occasional freezes, when trying to open the Menu (e.g. by pressing the "Select" button or when Lara dies).

It doesn't happen every time, though - just quite often.

Is there any way to prevent this?

ATM I am helping myself out by saving often...

Are you using the current version of PCSX? (r19)

http://repo.openpandora.org/?page=detail&app=package.pcsx_rearmed.notaz

I've played through TR2 with no problems, although a long time ago on a much older version of PCSX I did have very similar issues to those you describe on TR1.

If you're using r19 and still have these issues, you may want to redownload PCSX, and/or try a different copy of TR2 - I ripped mine from my own originals to .bin/.cue, and it works perfectly.

Did you overclock?
No - it's a 1 Ghz Pandora running at 1 Ghz.

Yes, PCSX is up to date!

I ripped it myself, too but it is using a different format. (*.img, *.ccd and *.sub files).

Do you think re-ripping in a different format might work?

(I ripped all my games with Alcohol 52% in Windows that way and didn't have any issues with them by now...)

Are you using the PAL version of Tomb Raider 2?

Ive ran into several PAL games that have crashed.

Try the NTSC version they usually all seem to work.

Try removing (renaming) the ccd file.  I seem to remember I had something similar.  Whats the contents of .ccd?

Yes. It's a german PAL version (I only have this one unfortunately ^_^ )

The *.ccd file looks like this:

Renaming it is not a good idea. :(

If I do so, the game boots up to the main menu, but I cannot start a new game or load a saved one nor can I enter Laras home...

Mine's a PAL UK disc, never had any problems with any of the PAL discs I've ripped - all to .bin/.cue - I'd rip it to a different format and try that. I didn't need any additional .sub or .sbi files. (it's a first issue disc, maybe later releases differed)

What Bios are you using? Have you checked that you have no options enabled in PCSX that might be causing a problem?

I'll try like you suggested...

I don't remember where I got the BIOS from.

Filename is SCPH1001.BIN and its 512 KB in size.

I don't think I selected something critical - I don't fiddle with advanced options just scaled up to fullscreen, that's it.

What are the options that might cause trouble?

I couldnt get the PAL versions of Final fantasty 8,9 and Resident evil 3 working yet the NTSC versions worked no problems

I find converting images to eboot format solves a lot of issues.

There are a few converters that can perform the task for you, Google is your friend here.

Your Bios sounds fine - same as mine, and TR2 works.
Graphics plugins options in particular could cause issues - but with TR games, the CD Audio is critical - if it can't locate a track for a specific event then it would typically hang. That could be a problem with the image or ccd/cue file - definitely try a different format first

there's no protection issue with your version I gather:

so a good rip should work.

There are dozens of variants of those - I have PAL Resident Evil 3 working fine too, not tried the FF games but I believe others have. RE3 is protected, each variant needs different anti-protection files for that specific version, for example see the Resident Evil 3 listings here:
http://redump.org/discs/quicksearch/resident-evil-3/

if you locate the specific release you want to run there (by it's official 'SLES-xxxx' etc Sony serial) and get the .sbi file for it, drop that into the same folder as the game image and ensure the filename is changed to match the image file, and it should fire up..
