Pidgin Problems

Running HF5, wireless connection to router (iwconfig set to 54M power off), gmail account that has been tested and working prior to today but today I cannot connect. Restarted, turned on wifi, launched Pidgin, no change. Suggestions?

Reboot won't help you with linux apps issues most of the time.

One thing I would propose is launching pidgin from terminal (launch terminal and type 'pidgin' there) - this way all the errors that will occur will be written in the terminal window so that you can give us more information to help you.

What one can try instead of rebooting with Linux apps is:

- installing newer version in the way conventional for given distribution

- rolling back to application defaults and performing setup once again. Your settings are typiacally kept in your home directory in a hidden file or subdirectory. Launch your file manager and enable showing hidden files (in View menu if I remember it correct). I haven't used pidgin for a long time now, but the folder you need is .pidgin or .purple, it can be in your home dir or in .config subdir. Move it elswhere or rename it, your pidgin will be set to defaults and you will be able to set up your account once again.

At least it would help to find out what's the problem - misconfigured pidgin, misconfigured wifi, etc.

One of the primary consequences of a reboot is to clear the RAM of its contents -- start with a clean slate. Windows doesn't usually need it either, but it is a rigorous step in troubleshooting as part of error replication.

While I could potentially opkg for the latest and greatest, I prefer not... my religion stays with the .pnd because it's modular and won't require reinstall upon future releases of the OS.

I had already tried deleting the appdata/pidgin folder and recreating the account data, but no joy was found there. Your point about errors in the terminal did make me look for options in Pidgin, and sure enough there is a debug window. One error I get seems benign; some permissions setting to a file ending in .xml.save. The other error I get is a timeout, which leads me to believe it's a network problem. Which is strange, because neither I nor my roommate have changed anything with that since setting it up.

Oh well, I'm about to travel so I'll test Pidgin at various AP's to see if I can achieve a connection. That should narrow it down right quick; obviously this issue is in all likelihood user error.

Thanks

that wouldnt be my first guess.

There is a large chance that google have changed something in their servers that actually broke the service through this version of pidgin.

I'm pandora-less theses days so I cant test.

If ou realy need it to work, try to find a ticket about that on the pidgin bugtracker, if it is fixed, I can build a newer pidgin for ya ;)

Sorry OP, it's my Ubuntu forums background where people go like 'It does not work!!111', so that reboot thing made me write the post.

@Hoodoo

No worries at all man, I do appreciate you stepping up and helping, even if it's Linux methodology to a Windows native. After all, this is a Linux device! :)

@Sebt3

Yep, doesn't seem to be user error now that I've tested here and there with a fresh install. I did a search for Pidgin problems like this one, but nothing that came up really matched or was even close to recent. For what it's worth, here is a debug dump. Thank you

I need to get better at googling. You rock, Sebt3! It's so nice not having to run Firefox (Heavy) just to chat on gmail.

For reference here, steps that fixed it:

1. Create/Modify Google Talk account.

Under the Advanced tab, set:

2. security: Use old-style SSL

3. port: 443

4. server: talk.google.com

Thanks again, guys.
