Translation?

I write 'skeezrish', which is like English but typed really really fast so with a high predictable error rate. All 'ld' (as in could) are replaced with 'dl' (as in coudl).

(My wife is Croatian if you want that in there. Much easier than Asian languages, since you get to go left to right and not right to left and moving all your windows around. I once had to write an app for a guy who was half Jewish and half Chinese, and wanted the UI to reorganize on the fly depending which tongue he was writing in; some write up and down, some write right to left. It was hell ;)

The farthest I came so far: Could open menu with A button and in the background the tiles started loading, but then it still crashed.
Yeah, I've disabled the download from the Repo. That's the old version. The new version has not yet been released

Assume you will announce, here in this thread, when a new version is available on Repo.

Doing a great job on all this so far, I am enjoying it...even if, for lack of time, I didn't play this month at all, LOL

Yes, there'll be an announcement when it's ready for release

Looks good!

I like the "browse by genre" feature, that can be really useful. We should discuss the genre names and their definitions though, because I don't like the current categories. But I guess we should do that in another thread - you have to use whatever the genres are called in the game config files.

We should also think a bit more about the banner images: currently they are 360x130 on milkshake's c4a website, I have no idea why that size was chosen but if we want to change that, we better change it as soon as possible because it's no fun having to redo artwork. I would propose the following:

Let's have two images for each game: one small 128x128 square, to be used as an icon so it should still be somewhat useful when scaled down to 64x64 or even 32x32, and one larger 256x128 (or 512x256) rectangle, to be used on the website and in TTH. This size works well for a 3x3 grid like in the video above. The icon images could also be used in TTH if you want to put more than 9 titles on screen without scrolling (a 6x3 grid with 128x128 icons or a 12x7 grid with 64x64 icons would work). I think we also need to specify that the images have to be PNGs so you can use transparency and no jpeg artifacts.

Also, something has to be done about the games with multiple entries for different episodes, modes or difficulty settings. It doesn't look nice in my opinion to have these duplicate entries in the list. I would solve this as follows:

- identify multi-entry games in some way, e.g. by adding a tag

- have only one set of artwork (1:1 icon, 2:1 banner) for each game, no separate ones for each instance of the game; display only this artwork (and of course only once) in the main overviews

- each instance can have "overlay" artwork, which is a mostly transparent PNG that gets overlaid on top of the base game artwork. If you really want to have completely different images for each instance, you can of course make the overlay artwork fully opaque, but this is not recommended

- the overlay is allowed to be smaller than the base image, and it will be aligned to the bottom right in that case

- in TTH (and on the website), when you select a multi-entry game, you get a submenu which shows the main artwork as a title (so you know what game the submenu is for), and to select the specific instance, you see a menu consisting of only the overlays (without the base image behind them). This could make a nice menu if the overlays are designed well.

- whenever you need to show specific instances in isolation (e.g. if you add specific instances as "favorites" but not the entire game, or if you want to show that your highscore got beaten in some specific instance, or in a "details" screen for a specific instance), you draw the base artwork with the overlay on top of it.

Whilst my Windows build showed a 3 column grid, the Pandora build will default to 2; but this will be configurable.

I'm not too bothered what size the banners are to be honest, but the shape (1:1, 4:3, 16:9, 16:10) would make a difference.

You need to pester Jeff about grouping games together. I could use something like the launch PND filename to group them, but that feels a bit hacky

each instance can have "overlay" artwork
I'm not quite sure what this overlay is for, is this when you select the game? so you can see which one is highlighted?

Keep separate the concept of frontend and backend; the genres the games are assigned to etc are part of the server, nothing to do with the frontend (which is just a thin client.) I'd suggest a separate thread so as to not conflate the two concepts. - ie: big design ideas, separate threads; stuff about thefrontend here, keep here. (ie: c4a server has a protocol, and we can have any numnber of frontends, of which the c4a website and tourny hub and the c4a-mame frontends are the current 3, but there could be any number.) Mind, the basic 'encoded genre' can be mapped to something different in the frontends, but all frontends should use same mapping to avoid confusion. (If you don't like my genre assignments.. I can make a list of them, and we can use mamedb or some other site to get something else.. fine by me, easy enough to change :)

As to existing marquee sizes; recall the history here.. I put out a demo to see if peopel liked it, and it blew up rather quickly from there; milkshake whipped up a website since my plain ASCII one wasn't good enough .. thzats it, thats the why :) I think he just found some marquee artwork, did a plain scale-down, and it worked out like that size As to if the size is appropriate for easy scaling to various target devices for usability etc, open up a discussion about it :)

As to multiple games .. read other threads; the offer I made was to have a 'group' key/value in the server; the frontends could then use a 'recursive' (very limited depth) thing.. show all for 'no group', and then if you pick a group level item, show all for that group; ie: frontend logic is 'show all for current group' (which could be all by default.)  Another thing needed for that idea is for me to spit out a marquee option for groups..ie: an opentyrion group marquee, plus the individual marquees for each game in the group

Using a 'group' like this (which could be a cloud of tags, not just one) allows us some arbitrary grouping abilities possibly; genre is like a group tag, but 'well defined' so menus can have a discrete listing, not something ever growing.

How a frontend would display relative to this sort of thing is separate, of course, but I like to think of it as a simple folder dynamic, nice and familiar and easy.

Anyway, just wanted to jump in and ehad this off before it becomes a TournyHub discussion, when it has to be kept a public protocol level discussion. What works for everyone/everything :) (not just pandora even...)

jeff

RL has been kicking me hard the last month, but things are getting sensible again (Well, still no sleep, but at least work not beeting me to death this month.) I can make a protocol change thread for my idea of the group tag, if folsk want me to kick this into motion.

Really, I need to nail down the protocol public documentation, since right now really its just informal that I send people, plus basic incomplete wiki stuff.

I also need to get some thoughts down on securing it a bit more for the future, since once I get the r-pi and PC crowds in etc, its going to get really sucky with spammers :/

Do you have a rough idea when you're going to look at this? I know real life doesn't always give you the time you want, but depending on how much and what you change, it could make a big difference to The Tournament Hub, so I'm considering halting this project until you have spec'd out the protocol

I'm keeping everything backwards compatible, so don't sweat it.

ie: I'm not changing it heavily in short term, and server will internally remap to the slightly changed forms. ie: Changing some of the /slash/this/that/ to ?param=foo&parm2=bar, so it can take more arguments; or maybe just take JSON requests and a very simple url, though that makes it harder for by-hand testing and impossible to bookmark. But for you, same old will work.

Its only new stuff that will have new urls, but thats okay :)

Long term there might be big changes, but I expect to backcompat as long as I can, but thats way down the road stuff.

If you're overwhelmed with your launcher and need to pause it, fishing for an excuse, just say it ;) But I wpon't hold you back. If theres anythign you need, just ask .. I'll respond fast, or use it as a reason to refocus for you :)

jeff

edit; example:

For adding other platforms like r-pi etc, it doesn't matter to you; the args you provide now will get you the same stuff back; but extra args, alternate url's to get the larger picture if you wanted it (Which you probably don't any time soon).

If I add messaging or other stuff, thats down the road.. new urls, etc.

Sort of on the fence.. how far do we go? what do people want? just a score server, or do we want chatrooms and challenge issuing and all that sort of BS..

I'm actually enjoying coding the Tournament Hub at the minute, I think it's looking one of my more visually pleasing projects, but there are talks about changes that make quite a difference to my UI (ie, grouping of game instances, multiple genres). If things are changing, I'd rather wait until it's a little more settled, and work with a stable protocol. I guess a consideration with that is what sort of timescale you're planning for fixing down "version 1"

Is the repo version of C4AMAME the same as you posted in here yet? (ie supports command line launching)

Never did update the repo.

I think I had a buglet still, thanks for reminding me .. it was launchable, but it didn't properly sync up its score changes.

I'll have to add that :)

.. adding game grouping should be relatively easy on the UI; ie: instead of showing a game, you'd show the game group marquee (you'd not even know the difference at that level), and then just do a 'zoom in' to show the subgroup (very easily filter on your linked list, internally; either a filter criterion, or not.. nothing else. Easy :)

But yeah, roll with it .. this is how things evolve, you have to roll with the punches :) Or you can wait, if its easier.

jeff

Haven't used the Pandora for 2-3 months now, came back, saw that The Tournament Hub was still not updated on the repo.

Is there any working version (= not already crashing at startup) available so far? Any work on it? Infos appreciated.

I'm afraid this project is practically dead. Maybe someday I'll get back to it, but I can't say for sure.

This is very unfortunate. I am a huge fan of what was presented so far!

People who agree, please like this post, to show your interest in The Tournament Hub!

Why is that? It was already working pretty well.
I never had a working version. Which versions were stable?
