Usb Connection Problem

I don't seem to be able to get the USB port to work at all on the GP2X,
at the moment I'm only trying to access the SD card as storage from
a Linux (Slackware) PC, but I would like to use USB networking as well.

I'm selecting Setting->USB->SD Memory Card which gives the
"USB connected" message, but the PC sees nothing (dmesg
reports nothing and there is nothing new visible from lsusb) all
these ports are known to work with other USB storage devices.

I've tried another Linux (RH FC5) box , a Windows PC (all these ports
are known to work with other USB storage devices), a different cable
and the latest firmware upgrade without success, have I missed
something obvious or have I got bad H/W (I've only had the unit
a couple of weeks) ?

dmesg on the GP2x reports (this is turning on the USB and then doing
a disconnect after a few mins):

This is a common problem. The USB cable shipped with the GP2X sucks. It's just a standard USB cable, so try again with another one you've got lying around the house. Or, you can purchase a new one for a few bucks/euros/pounds/whatever. :)

He said he already tried another cable so I guess that isn't the problem.

When you updated the firmware to it did it work correctly as I had this trouble when a firmware I thought had patched correctly had failed. The firmware number on the boot up screen and info screen should match. When you patch the firmware you need to hold 'start' and ' select' as the machine is booting otherwise it won't patch properly. (thanks to virusx for that bit of info)

I have tried another cable, and the GP2X supplied cable works with another device ...

I had noticed that the boot up screen still had the old version, but I've just redone the firmware
patch so it all matches now, but it doesn't seem to have fixed the USB problem.

Thanks,

Don't know what else to suggest. Did the USB work with the original 2.0 firmware if not perhaps the unit itself is faulty. Wouldn't hurt to try a different USB now the firmware is correct in case the cable is faulty. My knowledge is fairly limited so maybe someone with more experience can help.

I've never managed to get the USB to work (I've only had the GP2X for a couple
of weeks), I thought it might be worth a try in case it was a known S/W problem ...

Thanks,

Bernard
